Vanderbilt Cup Races

The racer is the French Hotchkiss entered in the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup and driven by Shepard, an amateur. The car finished in 15th place when sidelined by a broken crankshaft.

This is the Hotchkiss that raced in the 1906 VCR.  The driver in that race was Elliot Shepard, Willie K’s cousin.  This racer is easily identified by it’s “cannon barrel hood”.  Maybe this picture was taken near the Hotchkiss factory in Saint-Denis, Paris France but that’s just a guess.  No guesses yet on the passenger in the photo.

There was no whitewalls being made in 1946, because of postwar ration, the following years, some more were alotted to maybe to GM and Ford in ‘47 then late ‘47 Chrysler, by ‘48 widely available with prewar whitewall designs and change to tire size from 16” to 15”. In ‘49 thru ‘53 introduction of the very wide WWs like on Howard’s and other Tucker’s owners have that looks glamorous on the show fields. Tucker may have ordered only blackwalls maybe in ‘47, a differcult time to get WWs?

This stretch of the Motor Parkway was my turf growing up. I even recall playing on the run of remaining road that ran right through the wooded area near Long Island Jewish Hospital in the early 60s. But… I’m having a hard time picturing the stretch through Creedmore East of Winchester Blvd. Further mapping or tracing on new maps would help.

That’s the #6 Hotchkiss HH racer that ran in the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup race. The passenger looks like Jefferson DeMott Thompson. Since the driver of this car in the 1906 race was Elliot Shephard, Willie K’s cousin, I’m guessing the location of the photo could be in Central Park which was only a few blocks north of Willie K’s residence on Fifth Avenue.

From History Channel: How Henry Ford Invented the Model T

In the second picture from the 1962 auction we noticed one of the men with hats on looked familiar! It was my dad in the middle of the photo Vincent Fox. We lived in Huntington at the time.
He bought the Buick Estate Wagon when the auction was over. We had the car, partially restored, until 2003 when we sold it in Florida. Currently for sale by that owner and can be seen with a google search online.

If the 1906 grandstand location is correct, the photographer is looking west alongside Jericho Tpke between Hitchcock and Powells Lanes. The Press Box would be located across Jericho Tpke in an 80 acre lot, I believe once used for horses. Today the lot is the Queen of Peace Cemetery. 1906 VCR occurred on Oct 6, 1906, so photo is dated approximately Aug 1906

Guessing it’s the grandstand being built for the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race. The surrounding area appears similar to Jericho Tpke looking west. More to come

Looks like they are building the main grandstand for the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup race.  The photographer is facing west and we also see the press box being built on the right.  Since we also know what direction the racers drove in, we know the orientation of the photographer.  The picture was probably taken in August or September of 1906.  The property across from the construction was the Hitchcock estate and is now a cemetery.
