The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

I think the photo shows Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino’s Pizza, along with Sean and Mike Tucker, great grandsons of Preston Tucker. Monaghan and Domino’s is the connection to the Tritan A2 while Sean and Mike (along with Rob Ida) rebuilt Tucker 1044. The city that links the three is Ypsilanti, MI where Monaghan opened his first pizza store and was the hometown of Preston Tucker. It is also where Sean and Mike founded the Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Collection.

Greg, Weren’t rotary engines used on early planes ?

The people are John Tucker, Jr., the grandson of Preston Tucker, and John’s twin sons, Sean and Rob. Tucker 1044 is one of the Tuckers produced by Preston’s company in 1948.
John Tucker, Jr. lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Likely, his sons have ties to this city.
Ann Arbor is the site of Triitan Ventures, the manufacturer of the Tritan A2 Aero 2 #5.
Both vehicles reside at The Waterfront!

Al-
Wankel invented the rotary, so technically every rotary is a Wankel eventually perfected by Mazda, but Wankel rotaries were in older Audis and various other makes as well.
The 440cc single-rotary in the Tritan was built by an Israeli company named Savyro.

Howard, will you’ll be delivering Domino’s Pizza at your next Motor Parkway Preservation Society meeting in Bethpage?

I understand it has a “rotary” engine. Is it a Wankel?

I’m late! Racer is heading north after crossing Motor Parkway’s longest bridge (Central Ave/LIRR parkway bridge) headed towards Dead Man’s curve *2 under the Nibbes’ farmway bridge. This exact location is in between today’s Seaford Oyster Bay Expwy Rt 135 and Norcross Ave

Really great. Right up there with “where’s the beef?” or the “Mr. Owl” Tootsie Pop commercial. I work with people that have advanced dementia, and the saddest thing about this is that usually this doesn’t work. They are mostly gone. My mother started to get this way before we lost her. It’s called “the long goodbye” because we have to watch our loved ones fade away before our eyes before they die. But it’s wonderful to see some attention to this.

That looks like the #P42 Isotta being driven by Herb Lytle during the 1908 Motor Parkway Sweepstakes. Along with that race, Lytle also participated in 5 other Vanderbilt race events including the 1904, 1905 and 1908 Cup Races and the 1905 and 1906 American Elimination Trials. The photographer is facing south or maybe slightly southwest about 100 yards north of the Central Avenue / LIRR parkway bridge in Central Park (Bethpage). The other structure is the building behind the race fans which I believe was used for storing supplies / equipment during the LIMP construction.

I know this works well Rita’s Mom passed this spring at 96 but if we played songs from her past she would sing along and smile and be with us for a while. I call it the “bucket” effect .Our oldest memories are like the water at the bottom of the bucket but today’s breakfast spills out of the bucket. God bless Chevy for making a great commercial, I hate the ones where all they do is speed through the snow or streets, I think they add to the reckless driving today. Happy Holidays to you all and thank you Howard for this great website.
