Mercer in the 1910 Wheatley Hills sweepstakes.  Car was owned by H.M. Ozier.
Driver is Edwin H. Sherwood who never appeared in an actual Vanderbilt Cup Race.

Definitely hit close to home this holiday season!  Unfortunately not all endings are as happy as this.  But have to count our blessings for 99 1/2 years (mother-in-law nearly made it having passed just before Thanksgiving).  Thanks for sharing Howard.

Took me a while to figure this one out but I eventually determined that this location is just before the racers got to the second dead man’s curve.  The photographer is facing south and in the distance is the overpass that carried the Motor Parkway over the Long Island Railroad / Central ave crossing in Central Park (Bethpage).  This was the Motor Parkway Sweepstakes held on October 10th, 1908.  The driver is Herb Lytle driving the Isotta.  He finished first in this race.  He drove in a total of 6 Vanderbilt related races.  More than any other driver.

I’ve posted that first wonderful photo of Marty before, but not the second photo that I took at the same time of that event. Marty with his ‘groupies’ who helped him bring some of his collection from Bay Shore to this event in Jamesport, Riverhead. I understand he did this for some years at The Long Island Antque Power Association weekend event in July.

Thanks for the great tribute to your grandfather, Bryan.  I only visited him once back in 2014 but always remember what treasures he possessed and the stories he told.  Must have been a great time spending time together.  I found my pics of my visit and of Marty giving me my entrance tickets!  Now if I can only find those tickets!

I’ve seen some pretty fun cars over the decades, but this is super funny.  Imagine ordering a Domino Pizza; you already know that it tastes like greasy cardboard, but with this vehicle, by the time it arrives that grease will have solidified!

All kidding aside, your collection represents all sorts of innovation and ideas, some more useful than others, but never boring.
