The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Might the sport return in some form soon?

My guess is Deadman’s Curve #2, the Plainview Road turn, Bethpage, Nassau County, looking northeast where the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway currently exists, and from the view of the car, taken about 1930.

This is looking west in queens right before the parkway turns north to its western terminus. The picture was taken right after hollis court blvd and the area directly in front would be covered up by the clearview expressway. circa 1930

I’m back. After enlarging the 2nd closeup, I made out 2 concrete boundary posts at where I assume would be the W/S of the LIMP ROW.
From Mystery Foto #12 Unsolved:Possible Options for this Long Island Motor Parkway Curve- Ca.1928 Update
Whether I’m correct or not, I viewed the 1930 Airmap of Suffolk County….www.suffolkcountyny.gov to help me figure what section of the LIMP this may be.
After viewing the LIMP from end to end, the following location made most sense to me: I believe this is the parkway due north, then bending east towards Hoffman La. Hauppauge Suffolk County NY. The roads that existed in this time period ( 1930 ) that would be S/W of this location are Hawthorne Ave and Bridge Rd. I’m know the parkway remained 16 ft wide in Suffolk County ( no concrete extensions here ). Pretty sure the guardrailing wasn’t always consistent. None on the straightaway ( railing makes sense for the immediate curve ). It’s also quite rural here ( As it appears on the 1930 Airmap ).
Look forward to everyone’s comments!

Not directly about the car, but of interest to those who want to know more about the history of the company. I just started transcribing records in the National Archives as a way of keeping busy. Currently, I’m working on the documents from the Tucker Motors hearing with the SEC in 1949. Fascinating stuff. Just to let you know that this record is available at the Archives (or will be once we finish transcribing it, I’m not sure).

What a great found treasure. Do you know where the exact location of the grandstand was on Jericho Tpke?

The Mineola grandstand was located about one block west of Mineola Boulevard on Jericho Turnpike.

Yes, Frank. You could just see the rear of that old car. I like to think the auto belonged to a LIMPER like us. He or She was probably the photographer capturing the demolition of the bridge.

Strange that though the Motor Parkway bridge is “being taken down in the ‘60s,” there is a 50 year old car parked on the shoulder

When I was 12 or 13, I saw one of the GT350 H cars come up the driveway next door to our house in Ann Arbor. I ran to look at it and Carroll Shelby himself was at the wheel! He was friends with our neightbors. They introduced me and before I knew it Mr Shelby was giving me the ride of my life. I will never forget the look on his face as we broke every speed limit in our neighborhood. I think he was having more fun than I was!

Brian - We’ll be at Ronkonkoma as soon as the snow melts. Hopefully the LIMPPS will join as well, including Howard. Bob DeStefani will try to make the meet as well. This would be a most informative experience for all!

David I - I misunderstood, the lodge is also roughly 550-600 feet north of this aerial.
