Charles Schmidt was one of the early designer of automobiles. Beginning in 1894, Schmidt had over eight year's experience designing cars in his native France. He had been working as a plant superintendant at the Mors factory and as a part-time racing driver before coming to work for the company which became the Packard Motor Car Company.

The Packard Gray Wolf- One of America’s First Lightweight Racers
One of the five American entries in the 1904 Vanderbilt Cup Race was the 30-HP lightweight dirt-track Packard Gray Wolf. Driven by its designer Charles Schmidt, the first Packard racer had previously set one-mile and five-mile records in January 1904.
