SachemPatch: Motor Parkway Parade Rescheduled for October 30

Rain date quickly approaching for historic fun.

The First Annual Motor Parkway Parade to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the completion of the Lake Ronkonkoma section will be Sunday, October 30.

This event, run by the Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association, will feature the 1909 Alco-6 Black Beast Racer will lead the vehicles, as the car won the Vanderbilt Cup in 1909 and 1910. It will be followed by many local vintage vehicles from private collectors and from the Ronkonkoma Fire Department for an uninterrupted drive from Dix Hills to Lake Ronkonkoma.

The heritage association is looking for as many spectators to attend as possible.

Vintage Vehicles, 1948 and older, will parade from Deer Park Road and Motor Parkway in Dix Hills starting at 9 a.m. to Waldbaum’s Shopping Center on Portion Road in Lake Ronkonkoma

Directions for Participants from the Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association:

The starting point has been graciously offered by Rabbi Yackov Saacks at The Chai Center, 501 Vanderbilt Parkway, Dix Hills (at the intersection of Motor Parkway & Deer Park Avenue. Please pull in to the parking lot, (there is construction) and back into an available spot by 9:00 AM. If the lot fills up, the street will be sectioned off. There will be children being dropped off for school, however all should go smoothly. We will share an opening ceremony presentation by Legislator Jon Cooper and Staff. The motorcade will pulll into position on to the Motor Parkway. A starting Flag will be waved. Once at Waldbaums Shopping Center, another ceremony will be presented by Legislator Tom Muratore. Parade participants and riders will be offered bagels, coffee/tea/juice at the Heritage Booths. The cars will be shown to the public for a period.

“Clean Up the Old Bethpage Motor Parkway Bridge Day” a Big Success

Greg Oreiro: "Incredible day Howard!! Dee and I are looking forward to the next day on the 29th!

Kenneth J. Harris: "Very nice pictures. Takes me back to the early 50’s when I was a boy scout. Our scoutmaster used to take us on hikes on the Long Island Motor Parkway. We would access it by going up Hicksville Road for a fairly short distance north of Hempstead Turnpike, turn right (east) into a development, go north on one of the streets that ended at the parkway. We would then head east and hike until we reached the end (can’t remember exactly, must have been a former bridge there). Thanks for bringing back some memories.

Steve Zacchia: "My name is Officer Steve Zacchia and you should remember me as the curator of the Nassau County Police Museum. Saturday I checked in at the Bethpage Restoration at 3:00 so I could help out but was denied entry and told that it was too late..I left disappointed. I returned Sunday earlier and was able to see all the work that was accomplished. Good job ! It was quite interesting ! Please let me know of any future dates.

The 2011 AACA Eastern Division National Fall Meet in Hershey, Pennsylvania

$500 was raised for Child Abuse Prevention Services with the sale of books Vanderbilt Cup Races of Long Island and Long Island Motor Parkway at The Society of Automotive Historians Hospitality Tent at the Hershey Meet on October 7, 2011.

Paul Lashbrook (Society of Automotive Historians): "A big thank you to all of the authors and to those who served in the tent during the recent book signing event. Your presence and efforts resulted in a successful opportunity to add to our libraries. One hundred percent of the sale of Howard Kroplick’s books added many dollars to the fight against child abuse. A special thank you to Jim Cox who has donated all of the proceeds of the sale of his book, Simply Bev, to the Society. Thank you Jim."
