The Vanderbilts on their 1907 Palm Beach Vacation

In the winter of 1907, 29-year old William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. and his 32-year old wife Virginia "Birdie" went on vacation at the most luxurious hotel in Florida, The Breakers in Palm Beach.

The fun-loving personality of Willie K. (far left holding the stuffed alligator) was captured in this photo courtesy of The Breakers Collection. Mrs. Vanderbilt can be seen in the chair of the boardwalk bicycle with Lawrence Waterbury, a cousin of President Teddy Roosevelt, in the driver's seat. The gentleman to the right of Willie K. was Leland Sterry, The Breakers' manager. His brother Fred Sterrry, the manager of the Royal Poinciana (the Breakers' nearby sister hotel) was on the far right.
