Mystery Foto #9 Solved: The Intersection of Old Northern Boulevard and Northern Boulevard (circa 1950-1956)

Did you identify this weekend's Mystery Foto?

Answers to the Mystery Foto questions:

  • Identify the location, orientation of the photographer and the major roads

View looking southeast at the intersection of Old Northern Boulevard and Northern Boulevard (then Flushing and North Hempstead Turnpike) at Flower Hill, Roslyn Estates and Roslyn. The road at the top is Mineola Avenue.

  • Link the Mystery Foto to the Vanderbilt Cup Race(s)

The 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race course went north on Mineola Avenue with a sharp left turn onto Old Northern Boulevard. The course was used for both the 1906 American Elimination Race and the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race.

  • What is the date of the Foto? Provide a rationale.

The aerial was not dated. Base on the buildings and automobiles likely the Foto was taken from 1950 to 1956.

Intersection of 25A and Old Northern Blvd at bottom right corner (south) of photo, with Willis Ave as the cross street running east-west (roughly left-right in the pic).

Due north is about the upper right hand corner of the pic.

Have no idea of the connection to the races.

Photo dates to post 1949 and probably before mid-1950s.  I see many late-40s/early 50s cars, and the Roslyn Viaduct (to which 25A led to and crossed) was opened after 1949.

Northern Blvd and Old Northern Blvd facing east. My guess as to when the photo was taken would be the mid 50s as the Flower Hill community is relatively new.  I believe the Vanderbilt course went from Willis ave to Old Northern Blvd since the viaduct and modern Northern Blvd weren’t around in those days. Final note. Notice the Walter J Black building in the center of the photo.

Recognized this from when the Roslyn Landmark Society Facebook page posted this photo in March 2020.
Looking down at Northern Blvd and Old Northern Blvd towards a South easterly direction just before the viaduct in 1950.
This section of Northern Blvd was part of the 1906 race course.

On the left Vanderbilt Cup Rd. In the middle LI Express Way. On the right Grand Central Parkway or Northern State PRkway.
The view is of the roads proceeding East.

The photographer is facing west and a tiny bit south showing the intersection of Mineola road
Crossing old Northern Blvd and Northern Blvd.  The big gas station was an Esso station in the 50’s and across the street was Franklin National Bank.  The very new post WW 2 Neighborhood of Flower Hill, Roslyn is just below. I’m not great about cars but I’m guessing somewhere between 1948- 1952??? I would guess the Vanderbilt cup race used Norrhern blvd?

What a beautiful photo. Location is the Roslyn Estates/Flower Hill area. Photographer is looking southeast. Major roads are Northern Boulevard, Old Northern Boulevard, and Mineola Avenue. The 1906 VCR had North Hempstead Turnpike (Old Northern Blvd.) and Mineola Avenue as part of its course. Date has to be between 1949 (when the Roslyn Viaduct opened) and 1964 (when Cities Service became CITGO). Judging by the cars (postwar designs but no sleek Exner-designed Chryslers) I’d say 1954.

We are looking east or east-south-east over Roslyn and Roslyn Estates. The major roads are: Old Northern Blvd.; New Northern Blvd. (to the left toward the Roslyn Viaduct); Mineola Avenue; and Ridge Road East (the residential street on the left). Old Northern Blvd. and Mineola Ave. were part of the course for the 1906 V. C. R.  Based on the apparent age of most of the cars, I’ll guess the date to be about 1955.

Roslyn viewing broadly east. Northern & Old Northern Blvd, Mineola Ave. Old Northern Blvd & Mineola Ave was a portion of the 1906 VCR. A 1950 aerial seems to have less development than the mystery foto, so I’ll say 1956.

Northern Blvd, Old Northern Blvd.  Roslyn, Flower Hill.

Old Northern Blvd and Northern Blvd!

Roslyn: Intersection of Mineola Avenue, Old Northern Blvd. and North Hempstead (Northern Blvd.) Turnpike.  View is looking east.  Roads are as mentioned.

Part of the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup and Elimination Races.

Mid-late 50s.  After the building of the homes on Ridge Road (1951) but before the building circled in the photo was built (1966).  Cities Service ad from 1959.

Incidentally, the building on the lower right part of the mystery photo is where many of the scans presented in vanderbiltcupraces.com are created.

Great stuff! Looking East in the ‘50’s but I don’t know where. After zooming in, the cars match that era; and while those appear to be Levitt homes, I don’t believe the location is in Levittown. I’m struggling with this one. Great mystery Howard!

Facing Southeast Northern Blvd with
Mineola Ave on the right at the top of the
Picture.Parallel to Northern on the right is
Old Northern Blvd.Based on the cars I can
See it’s about the early 50’s.

This is Northern Blvd. (lge multi lane rd.) Old Northern blvd. paralell to the right. Mineola Ave.(Willis Ave further South)  enters from upper right and crosses both roads. It’s called Center drive between the two Northerns and north of Northern blvd.  The photographer is looking East - South East. Following the two Northerns up out of the picture they start to descend into the “Roslyn Harbor Valley”, with Northern crossing the viaduct. As a child I remember my father taking a turn off Mineola Ave.(Layton street?) to go to Bar beach. I remember a very narrow switchback that was heavily overgrown beyond the shoulders of the road. The road to the left of Northern w/houses is Ridge drive. As far as a date I can only estimate early to mid 1950’s,based on vehicles in photo. As far as connection to Cup races I have to plead ignorance.

The homes shown at the bottom of the image were just built within the past couple of years by developer Arthur Newman (the surviving partner for Garry & Co., which developed this part of Broadridge; deeds, mortgages, and insurance claims for the development of Broadridge all indicate that Lawrence Garry had passed away, and that Newman was the surviving business partner by the time this photo was taken.

This photo was likely taken during the middle of 1950 or 1951; the “Roslyn Cut-Off” (A.K.A. the Roslyn Viaduct) opened in late 1949, and when Broadridge was originally platted out by the developers roughly a decade prior to the taking of this picture, “Old” Northern Boulevard (which is the right fork) was the only Northern Boulevard in the area. What is now the Roslyn Cut-Off was originally planned as more space for parking (and likely for landscaping/screening, as well). Additionally, the minutes from Flower Hill’s board meetings make plenty of references to the construction of the Roslyn Cut-Off and how it impacted the Broadridge Business Area.
