Mystery Friday Foto #25 Solved: The 1905 Locomobile Being Tested
Did you identify this new race car being tested in this photo from the Helck Family Collection?
Identify the following;
- Year of the racer and photo and the race car
The 1905 Locomobile being tested for the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race. This racer also participated in the 1905 Gordon Bennett Cup Race.
- The three gentlemen in the photo
A.I Riker of the Locomobile Company, Driver Joe Tracy and mechanician Al Poole.
- Kudos: Identify the Long Island road
Base don the telephone poles, a best guess is Jericho Turnpike or Glen Cove Road.

This is the 1905 Locomobile prototype being tested for what I believe to be its possible entry into the 1905 Gordon Bennett race. I believe it suffered from transmission problems and failed to enter that race. In the picture is Joe Tracy, Al Poole and A.I. Riker. Maybe they were using the same course where the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race and Elimination trials would be. And with those telephone poles I’m going to throw out a guess and say that they are on I.U. Willets road.
It could be Guinea Woods Rd in Westbury looking north (today’s Glen Cove Rd). Just north of Old Country Rd. More research needed

I think that might be the 1905 Locomobile being tested for that year’s Vanderbilt Cup Race. The three men in the photo could be Joe Tracy, A. L. Riker, and Al Poole. I’ll guess either Jericho Turnpike or Glen Cove Road for the road they’re on.

The middle photo, is that a RR crossing lights by the house? If crossing Jericho Turnpike there are two I might know by Bullheads now Greenvale, Oyster Bay branch?, or in Syosset for the Port Jefferson branch? both in Nassau County the location of the races.
