Favorite Website: The David Rumsey Collection of Long Island Maps

Joel Friedman, archivist at the Cradle of Aviation, recommends the David Rumsey Map Collection website for all you map lovers. The website provides 123  interactive maps of Long Island.

Unfortunately, David Munsey Map Collection does not have many Motor Parkway maps with the exception of the 1938 Land of Moses Map detailed below.

However these Long Island maps are worth a visit:

1839 David Burr Map

1863 J.H. Colton Map

1873 Beers, Comstock & Cline Map

1933 General Drafting of Recreation and Romance (includes Roosevelt Raceway three years before it was built)

All Long Island maps

Enjoy,

1938 Land Of Moses

The map was created by Richard Edes Harrision maybe as a tribute to Robert Moses or maybe not.

The key focused on the state of Moses' projects in 1938.

A shout-out to the Long Island Motor Parkway which is a dotted line from Cunningham Park to Lake Ronkonkoma.

The Queens section featuring the World's Fair 1939 (Flushing Meadow Park after the Fair).

The Nassau County section. Note the Northern State Parkway comment: "Detour around protesting landowners."

The Suffolk County section

‘Detour around protesting landowners’ I wonder when the term ‘objector’s bend’ came to be in use.
