The Helck Family Collection challenged you to identify this weekend's Mystery Foto.

  • Identify the location and orientation of the photographer. Hint: The building was standing on the Vanderbilt Cup Race Courses from 1904 to 1910.

The East Norwich Turn located at the intersection of Jericho-Oyster Bay Road and North Hempstead Turnpike (25A). The photographer is looking south-east.

  • In which Vanderbilt Cup Race(s) was this part of the course(s)?

1905 and 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Races

  • What year was the photo taken? Provide a rationale.

1955. The makes of the automobiles and owner of the store at the location: J.D. Meyerdiercks

  • Kudos question: Identify the automobiles in the Mystery Foto.

From Tim Ivers and Al Prete: The car next to the building looks like a 50 Chevrolet.  The car in the middle facing us looks like a 48 Dodge.  The panel truck on the left looks like a 48 Chevrolet.

No clue about the corner. The cars are a ‘46-‘48 Dodge (coming towards the camera) and a ‘50 Chevrolet (with its rear to the camera).

Looking south in East Norwich at North Hempstead Turnpike (25A) and Route 106.
This was one of the hairpin turns in the 1905-1906 races.
The building (southwest corner) was the McQueen store.
The car next to the building looks like a 50 Chevrolet.
The car in the middle facing us looks like a 48 Dodge.
The panel truck on the left looks like a 48 Chevrolet.
Photo from 1950.
Attached is another photo of McQueen’s store

No clue (what’s new?) but the Chrysler product facing us at left is a 1946-48 Dodge, so that dates the pic to no earlier than very-late 1945.  Wild guess based on vague recollection of Meyerdierk’s - East Norwich at No. Hempstead Tpke. (No. Blvd./25A) and Jericho-Oyster Bay Road (106), probably at south-east corner?  Sam, III

In the second photo the white car looks like a 1960 Pontiac.

Tom, no 1960 anything and no 1950 Pontiac (no stripes on trunk lid).  As to Howard’s “Circa 1950s” pic, those are ‘57-‘58 Chrysler Corp. tail fins.  Sam, III
