The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

At this point I have tracked this car to Wayne NJ. No one has returned my call. If any reader knows if it I could make a positive ID with images of the dash board and one from the rear with the tail gate down. It looks like it spent the last 47 + years in NJ mostly parked outside. Thanks Hugh Nutting now in MT.

For years the Broadmoor used Pierce Arrow touring cars. Many were scrapped where the Air Force Academy is now. They had cast aluminum bodies that were broken up for the WW2 scrap drives. After the war most of the Broadmoor fleet was Cadillacs.

I don’t think I have any images of John. He was at the “First Day Cover” Woodie stamp event in Denver and at a VMCCA tour to Sun Valley ID in the early 1990s.

Found among Peter Helck’s black and white sketches in the Helck Family Collection is this one of a dangerous curve in the Paris to Madrid race. Similar to Ariejan’s picture above except that the dog in this one didn’t appear to be quick enough.

Remaining answers on the marked map attached. Based on the 1950 LRV aerial, say the date of the mystery foto is around 1950. The junction of the Northern State & Meadowbrook Pkwys doesn’t exist yet, not until 1956.

Hugh,
The Woodie Times article would be fantastic! I would like to give John credit for the restoration, Do you have an image of him?

I did an article for the Woodie Times in about 1994 after a visit with John in Colorado Springs. Most likely I have a few photos of it somewhere.

Here’s another tidbit about the fence around the Deepdale Estate. Looks like Willie K. was very concerned about not being annoyed by the construction crew. And at a cost to Willie of $60,000 I’m sure the crew didn’t mind. Last paragraph pertains to his issues with the Lake Success village officials about access to the lake. But that’s a whole other blog!

Correction - the mine shaft is about where the secondary rainbow hits the ground

This Dodge Bros suburban came from the David Gold Mine on Sugarloaf Mountain west of Boulder Colorado. I was told about it from a fellow staff member at the Boulder Daily News who lived about a mile South of the mine. I had an early CJ5 Jeep and was able to get to the mine. It was sitting on the tailing pile near the mine shaft maybe for over 30 years. The image with out the rainbow shows the mine location [upper right]. Lower Right you can see the chimney of the mine workers boarding house. +

Location: Carle Place/Mineola. The photographer is looking north.
Motor Parkway: Lower half of the Foto, about one-third of the way from the left edge. It runs north-south (vertically). The Mineola Lodge (still standing as 284 Rudolf Road) and the ramp and bridge to/from/under Jericho Tpke. can be seen.
Roads: Hillside Avenue, Jericho Turnpike, Glen Cove Road, and the Northern State Parkway. No Meadowbrook Parkway yet.
Golf course: Wheatley Hills.
Date: I’d say 1940, because the LIMP can’t be seen on the golf course, so the roadway must have been removed.

Looking north over East Williston and Williston Park.
Motor Parkway south down the middle and north of Hillside Ave. into the Wheatley Hills Golf Club.

Late 40, early 50s. Richard Robbin’s estate had already been layed out with streets but no homes.

Looking North at the ‘Objector’s bend’ section of the Northern State Parkway. The interchange seen in the photo is the exit/entrance ramps of the NSP and Glen Cove Road. The two main horizontal roads are Hillside and Jericho. The LIMP is vertical on the left side. The Jericho Road bridge is still present, but the Hillside and Wheatley Hills Golf course bridge appear to be gone. The Mineola Lodge in the photo is still there to this day as a private home. To make it easy, my date rationale is the photo is 1956 and was taken with the other recent Cradle of Aviation aerial mystery photos.

The blue 1925 Dodge Woodie looks to be the one I found in Colorado I 1970 as a basket case, Most of the rebuilding work was done in 1971 in Boulder and Golden CO. I sold it to a friend who sold it someone in NJ. It has rare 21” wood spoke wheels.

John Lee,
Thank you for The Broadmore Hotel identity. When I acquired the car it came with all of John Koll’s research and photographs. It was quite a project. Rumor has it, “Woodie Times” published an article about the car more than 5 years ago. Hopefully, their archives person can find it for us. Thanks again.

Best wishes and best of luck in this new endeavor. We eagerly anticipate its publication. How long we have waited for a publication with the quality and similar content as Automobile Quarterly. Sign me up!!!

Bob Minty, you probably know the owner of the 1929 Oldsmobile was John Koll of Colorado Springs, who passed away a few years ago. I believe it was his son who took ownership and sold the car via a classic car auction. I don’t know his first name, but I think he lives in the Colo. Springs area. The most famous hotel there is The Broadmoor.

That’t great Howie, I’m happy for you and wish you and the Kroplick family the best of health. Interestingly, I had an appointment for my COVID-19 vaccination in Los Angeles today at 12:30 PM, as well - My experience was almost identical to yours in many ways, however, I went to Cal State University Northridge where (true to LA style) everyone stayed in their cars as the 3 lanes of endless automobiles inched forward to the first checkpoint for ID’s, then to the injection stations (under a massive solar paneled parking lot) for the vaccination - while sitting in my car. I, too, got the Pfizer shot that was painless and I have zero discomfort!
