The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Every week there’s something to pick my interest and this week is no exception. Great presentation and terrific material is a combination that is indeed worthy of the awards. Congrats, Ken

Terrific find. When you get it completed, I would like to do a special town car class at Amelia. The car looks amazingly complete.

Howard what a grand automobile! Reminds me of my 8-passenger 1938 Buick Limited 90L limo, gone to a new owner now (your rare Chrysler is in its own class!). I see a panting with Walter P. Chrysler and his wife and the Town Car, when you are ready! I would enjoy putting it to canvas 😊
Best wishes,

A wonderful story. Putting names to faces in old photographs is challenging but oh so rewarding. Now we can celebrate Domenich Basso’s contributions to automotive history.

I’ve been in the Mineola area since 1955. I believe there is still a section of the L.I. Motor Parkway that was part of the roadway leading to the Williston Park Pool area. The roadway is East of Willis Avenue close to the northern most part of Williston Park and traveled East-West. There has been other development in that locale and I don’t know how the road then turned south, but I’m willing to bet researching the recently released 1940 Census Maps would shed light on the remaining sites.
I’d love to hear back if you know more details!
Thanks,
GJT

I have lived in this neighborhood all my life, since 1953. The area south of Westbury Ave is Village of Mineola property. The area north to Raff Ave was open when I was a kid and we used it as a walkway when headed from home to the Korvettes shopping center which was just east of the roadway. The south side was also not enclosed at the time. We both walked and road our bikes over these areas, never really realizing what they were or why they were there.

Lots of interesting designing ideas. Remember LeBaron built the 1934 Imperial Airflow as well. The rear view mirrors are more like motorcycle type - worked good for the blind spots their driver had to deal with.
The #10 manufacturer’s plate is interesting in that is lower than Edsel Ford’s # 22. Might be from Walter’s Maxwell days?
Great original photos - thanks

good research—as usual—- the large fender skirts in evidence on the 1937 photo complete the beautiful art deco design.
The three ridge botton moulding is evocative of the airflow design…It’s evident too on the steering wheel.

Again, all the positive vibes are much appreciated!

Having grown up on Long Island’s south shore in the ‘50s, I’m sentimental of cars like this. As a young teenager, with an itch to drive the nicer cars than our family Ford, I found a way to do it legally.
Working as a caddy at one of the country clubs, I washed and parked many of the cars owned by the members. The nicer ones included a ‘55 T-Bird, black convertible, but goshdarn, it had an automatic. At an evening function, I’d also get to valet park, where some of the more challenging ones appeared…(Remember, I was 14) including a large British sedan, silver, with a dashboard row of toggle switches I was stymied by. Where to start it?
Ahh, the memories are still with me as it was there I cut my teeth on the cars built with style and panache!
