The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Howard:
The 1932 Hagstrom Map shows an overpass over the LIMP (Bloomingdale Road extension) which connected with Hempstead Tpke. The overpass is about halfway between Jerusalem Avenue on the west and Wantagh Rd (Ave.) on the east.
Are there any known photos of this overpass, or other information?

“The You Tube video was great, I can’t wait to see the car in person. Congratulations on a wonderful classic purchase.”

I applaud the owner’s restraint in not wanting to “over-restore” this car. Having said that, it is a shame that this car doesn’t get a proper restoration as its provenance makes it a significant car worth bringing back to life as it was in the 1937. Our 1938 Imperial is getting ready for it’s 3rd paint job, the last having been applied in the early 1960’s.

Though this Packardite has NO interest in limousines, town cars, anything on a long wheelbase, Packards included, there’s something arresting about this sleek ‘37 Imperial. One of the few Deco looks that works, helped by the less is more of no sidemounts and an understated, basic hood ornament. Let’s hope the restorers keep the car in its slinky, sleek, uncluttered mode, sans fog/driving lights and the usual efflivia seen on too many restored cars that seldom wore such in the day.
Any hope of this car being rejuvenated without whitewalls for an even more elegant look? Let that flowing LeBaron body do the talking.

“Congratulations on your purchase! It now has a good home and caretaker…kudos also on your decision not to restore every nut & bolt to ‘better than new’...take plenty of photos of the restoration process. I could see HEMMINGS Motor News doing a feature article on this…!

Hesh,
As usual, you amaze. You’ve breathed life into the past, reanimated
a stately ghost of yesteryear. You are the incarnation of Jay Gatsby.
Phil would be kvelling.

Dear Howard,
Regarding the Alco-6 Black Beast Racer featured film clip which won the Folio Award for best reporting on Long Island, it seems that with your continuing promotional efforts, there is no end to your achievements and notoriety. Once again you are to be commended. Keep up the rewarding work!

Although I grew up in Wantagh, my parents friends lived in Albertson and the parkway ran near their home. We played on the concrete road and I often wondered about the history of the parkway.

I love this story Howard, what a grand car, I am sharing your newsletter with friends in the Classic Car Club of America. I will be at their Michigan museum in June exhibiting art at the annual members’ gathering. I would think the CCCA magazine would do well to do a story on your Chrysler.
Best wishes,
Chris Osborne

Thanks for the comments.
This month is dedicated to cleaning the car, taking an inventory of parts and researching plans for the future.
Marvel mystery oil has been engaged and within a few weeks we will try to get “CC” started.
The car will be repainted….no date decided yet. The technology to paint on aluminum has hopefully improved!!

Really enjoyed the pictures both as an auto enthusiast and as an owner of a Levitt house.

While I agree that a car should look it’s age, I don’t think a paint job would hurt that beautiful thing. I envy you in that you will be able, in time, to drive around in that one of a kind wonder.

Wow, great photos and also shows the destruction or perhaps the over built way most if not all of Long Island has become.
