Looking at the videos over and over to capture everything,not to miss a thing of what was happening,I noticed The Beast was struggling a little and I think you changed gears and it was fine,this was at the top of the hill,am I right about that? And also to see the expression on your face while driving,the joy you were having,waa whoo,I’m going to make it to the top

I presume this Friday mystery wasn’t coincidental, as the cartoon is directly related to the Saturday’s post: William Vanderbilt, after his world speed record, flying through the stars, seeking “other worlds to conquer”. The cartoon appeared in the magazine MoToR.

Could be Willie K (though doesn’t resemble him), gloriously sailing the heavens after setting the auto speed record at 92.3mph with his 90hp Mercedes at Ormond-Daytona Beach (birthplace of speed) on Jan 1904. This event helped set the stage for Vanderbilt Cup Races on Long Island

Following the event, Vanderbilt would create the first international racing event, The Vanderbilt Cup Race, challenging other from across the world to compete for the Vanderbilt Trophy. The trophy had on it Vanderbilt driving his Mercedes as he set the speed record in Ormond.

This is the cover illustration for an automobile trade journal “Motor’s Gallery Of Motoring”, that was published soon after William K. Vanderbilt, jr. set the land speed record of 92.30 MPH on January 27, 1904. It shows Willie K. in his Mercedes, the “Ormond Flier”, which he drove at Ormond / Daytona Beach, Florida, breaking Henry Ford’s recently established record. The caption under the illustration reads “Holding the speed record for this earth, the champion seeks other worlds to conquer”. This was quite prophetic since Willie K. went on to establish the Vanderbilt Cup Races later that same year.

This was easy because I sort of cheated and looked at the Vanderbilt Cup Races Blog for February 11, 2014 - It’s Wm. K. Vanderbilt Jr at the wheel of a Mercedes 90 hp racing car having just set a new land speed record of 92.3 mph in Florida at the 1904 Ormond-Daytona race, January 27, 1904, as illustrated in Sports Car Illustrated. Later that year, in October 1904, he would establish the Vanderbilt Cup.

i lived off stewart ave i new mr bolsen lived on bolsen dr off ladenburg dr he was 93 yrs old his 2 daughters were in there 70s mr bolsen had many horse related items in his basement the house is still there today.
