CARROLL SHELBY ALSO SIGNED THE GLOVE BOX DOOR FROM MY 1967 SHELBY GT 500 NUMBER 1726, THIS WAS FROM WHEN I MET HIM AT ATLANTIC CITY NJ SEVERAL YEARS AGO. I ALSO HAVE A PICTURE OF HIM SHAKING MY HAND AS HE IS HANDING ME THE SIGNED GLOVE BOX DOOR. I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN OFF THE BRUSHED ALUMINUM DASH PANEL INSTEAD BECAUSE THE SIGNATURE ON TH GLOVE BOX DOOR IS HARD TO SEE. I HAVE OWNED THE SHELBY FOR 47 YEARS. IT HAS ABOUT 22,000 MILES ON IT NOW HAS NOT BEEN OUT OF STORAGE GARAGE FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS NOW. I HOPE THE GOVERNMENT MANDATED FUEL HAS NOT DESTROYED THE CARBURETORS WHILE SITTING IN STORAGE.  THE FUEL PUMP IS THE ORIGINAL MECHANICAL FUEL PUMP FROM 1966.
THE CURRENT GASOLINE ALSO RUINED MY TURBO CORVAIR ENGINE BY EATING UP THE FUEL PUMP. ALSO IT DAMAGED THE CARTER YH CARBURETOR ON THE ORIGINAL TURBOCHARGER. I GOT A KIT AND REBUILT THE CARBURETOR 2 YEARS AGO AND JUST HAD TO REBUILD IT AGAIN 2 WEEKS AGO. I GOT IT STARTED BUT IT STILL HAS A KNOCK WHICH WAS CAUSED BY THE GASOLINE WASHING LUBRICATING OIL OUT OF THE BEARINGS. IN THE MEANTIME. N.Y.S D.M.V. HAS BEEN CHARGING US $30 A YEAR FOR METROPOLITAN SUPPLEMENTAL COMMUTATOR TAX ON EACH OF OUR COLLECTOR CARS EVEN IF THEY ARE IN STORAGE AND WE DO NOT COMMUTE WITH THEM.

This mystery photo to me is too easy to me,because I knew right off the bat that’s Sam Greco driving that car and I know he has a car like that,he brought it to the Easter Parade in Garden City,so all I had to do is find about it. This is what I came up with. The car is a 1905 Curved Dash Oldsmobile. As to another car older than that,I might get back to you on that.

I have a similar story from Lime Rock.  I had a copy of Dennis Jenkinson’s book “The racing driver”.  Dennis was Stirling Moss’s co-driver in the record setting Mille Miglia race in the Mercedes 300SL.  Waiting in the 85 degree heat I finally got to meet Sir Stirling.  His wife Lady Susie said ” You must be baking out there in this heat and then said oh look…he has Jenk’s old book!  I told her as soon as he signed it I would head for my car for a cold beer.  She asked if she could join me.  I said of course!  Great memories.  Great story about Shelby and his Mustang.  Regards.  Mitch

I am delighted for you, although, for the life of me, what you have to do with customizer George Barris eludes me.  You preserve historic vehicles (thank you) and he chopped them up.  Love John’s choices; he hit on another of my favs - the silver car fourth from bottom is a 1949 “Silver Anniversary” Chrysler.  Once again, I should know - I drove THREE of them over the years, from Dad’s new one, my own four-year-old one, and selling off the last as late as 2007 (see my site)!  Sam, III

Nassau brick was very popular on long island and used extensively in building of houses etc in Queens, Nassau , and Suffolk Counties. My house is built with Nassau brick, dates form 1953 (built by my Dad and Grand Father who were brick masons/contractors) so Nassau Brick was still in business as of that date.

Sam Greco’s 1903 Oldsmobile

Toyn Guarnaschelli’s ALCO truck might be older?

A VEHICLE THAT IS OLDER THAN THE SAM GRECO 1903 OLDSMOBILE, IS A 1901 ROCHESTER STEAMER, IT WAS IN PARKER WICKAMS’S MUSEUM COLLECTION IN MATTITUCK L.I.  I SAW IT THERE UNTIL 2011 WHEN PARKER PASSED.  I DO NOT KNOW IF SOMEONE ON LONG ISLAND NOW HAS IT OR IT WENT SOMEPLACE ELSE. MANY OF HIS VEHICLES WENT TO A MUSEUM IN ALASKA. I WAS TOLD THIS RECENTLY BY A FELLOW HERE ON L.I. THAT NOW HAS PARKERS’ 1952 MUNTZ JET.

I BELIEVE THAT IS SAM GRECO DRIVING THE 1903 CURVED DASH OLDSMOBILE. HE USUALLY HAS IT AT WESTBURY GARDENS SHOW AND AT THE EASTER DAY PARADE.
SEVERAL YEARS I JUDGED A 1899 LOCOMOBILE HERE ON LONG ISLAND. IT WAS STEAM POWERED

Good morning Howard,

What a Great Story!  I have always read and heard about the legends of the Shelby Rent-A-Racer, now I hope to see your car someday at one of the local shows.  I missed out on seeing your Black Beast the day you stopped by my home in Huntington to pick up the Ash Tray you got from me.  I did manage to see your prototype 2 seater Mustang at the USMMA.  I would love to see your Chrysler one day too.  Keep up these wonderful newsletters as it is one of the few items I look forward to reading.

Have a Happy Sunday,
Artie and Patty Perkins

I don’t think that’s correct. That 1871 built LIRR/Central bridge (the “stone bridge” as it was called on maps, at the juncture of Tulip Ave., Jericho Tpke./Jamaica Ave., and Little Neck Road (later Little Neck Parkway), was only lengthened in 1931/2, along with Jericho tpke/Jamaica ave. being widened and completely paved. It’s the same “new” bridge that was later taken down 40 or so years later. The original “stone” bridge (really a short trestle bridge supported on stone) was only lengthened once, not twice, as I recall. I own the last of the George/Ben Rhodes Little Neck Parkway homes at 87th ave. and Little neck Parkway, built in 1878, just a few blocks north of the intersection pictured. The other four Rhodes homes were taken down long ago to accomodate the laying out of the grid for the streets intersecting Little Neck Road, and it’s widening.

Congratulations on your award.Tell John he looks good honoring your car in your behalf. Still wish you would bring it here,to the villages, like I said once before, you would be a crowd teaser, pleaser, shocker and whatever else I can say,you would bring something that most of the people have never seen, nothing compares to what you have, except for the Mustang Rent A Car. I stopped going to the car show every month,it’s always the same cars,I only go when there’s a special attraction and it hasn’t been much to talk about. So that’s the story here.

Mystery Foto # 39… The auto is a 1905 Curved Dash Oldsmobile. The current owner would be Suffolk County Historical Society, Riverhead. The name John Van Mater Howell of Southold is associated with this car. The original owner, Maybe.  As I recall someone was producing scaled down, functional replicas back in the 50s or 60s. I remember one at the Worlds Fair where I worked in 1964, 1965.
