That’s Josef Newgarden who was a rookie driver for the Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing Honda team when the photo was taken on May 23, 2012. It was during the Wednesday Community Day events at Indianapolis, IN leading up to that year’s Indy 500 Race.

Was there, nice but not worth traveling there and staying over. The Colonie section of Albany (Wolf Rd./Rt.5 Central Ave. Exit of Rt.87 Northway), within an hour from the meet, great area to stay. What was very good was the steam boat 1 hour cruise of Lake George by the waterfront nearby. What’s better is the Hershey meet. 2 years ago, excellent weather, great turnout, hope to be there again.

I remember as a little girl my parents taking me to ” the High School” to see “The Pirates of Penzance” in the building that was to become Burr’s Lane Jr. High. I was a student there when it was the Jr. High and I graduated from the HS on Vanderbilt in 1968. I also remember a tiny cemetery that could be seen from some of the classroom windows during the fall….

Joe Oesterle…..OK Part 2. The building that’s just N/O the LIMP ( vicinity of Lodge, Manager’s Office ) and E/O Clinton Rd is the Clubhouse ( Old Westbury Golf Club ). My mind is fixed on the odd looking house just N/E of the Mayan Ruins. And now I’m fixed on going to bed.

Joe Oesterle…... If your wondering about the building ( steep roof ) that’s just a rock’s throw N/E of the Mayan Ruins, so was I. There’s that 1/2 circle landscape design next to it. Makes me think that helicopters or small planes may have landed there? I look around the site here for other images of this area.

Howard, The timing of your question regarding the the disposition of the Parkway’s Petit Trianon Inn property is impeccable. Yes, I am familiar with those details as they are covered in book I am writing on the Inn which I hope to publish later this year. All will be revealed at that time. Originally, this book was to be a chapter in my work on the Motor Parkway. There came a time when I realized I had more than enough very interesting material on the Inn (and the annex ) that it’s story should be told separately. Will keep you informed about the timing of publication. Thanks, Al.

In the group picture, I believe the man in striped suit shown in one version of the picture (he’s in background in other version) is David Dunbar Buick. Reason is the man in the same suit is identified by GM as DDB in two other photos taken at Cobe Trophy winner’s circle, with winning driver Louis Chevrolet. I am author of the book “David Buick’s Marvelous Motor Car” and will use several pictures with this ID in a planned 4th revised edition. The photo was taken facing N/W from over Garden City looking towards Carle Place, Westbury , and Roosevelt air field.
The LIMP structures observe in the photo are The Clinton Ave Bridge, the general manager’s office, the Vanderbilt Cup races track and complex, and the Myain ruins bridge abutments.
Roosevelt air field (Curtiss field) and hangers, and runways can be seen in the photo. Also you can see the Old Westbury Cub golf course, Meadowbrook Club Polo fields, and the LIRR main line.
I would say the photo was taken in 1936 possibly 1937. I compared the aerial photo take in 1933 and 1938 to make this determination. The 1938 photo did have development in Garden City west of Clinton Ave. The 1933 photo not have any development. It looks like the cup course was just completed.

Helmut,
Can I ask the engine number and chassis number. I have a 19118/18PS Mercedes and have been trying to find the whereabouts of this car for over 10 years. I assume it is the ex-Astor town sedan that for some time was in the Imperial Palace Motor Museum? It is a magnificent original car! I think yours and mine are the only two 8/18ps Mercedes still existing?? Would love to hear more about it from you - and would love some photos. Regards, Wayne
