The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Looks like you guys had a great day. I was away for the weekend. And wish I had the chance to join everyone.

1939, the New York World’s Fair in Flushing Meadow Park as well, with Robert Moses at the helm. And the Motor Parkway closing just one year earlier. Seems like so much activity in such a little stretch of time.

Art, In June of 1907 the Parkway purchased 4.7 acres from William A. Finger and his wife Louise for the ROW and proposed entrance paying $3011 for the two parcels. In July of 1908 the Parkway acquired the parcel marked .05 which we know was used for the lodge site and entrance way. I couldn’t find any record of monies changing hands for the .05 piece, I’m assuming that a swap took place, the Fingers taking back the original proposed entrance way for the.05 tract. The change made sense for both parties, Round Swamp Rd. was the major roadway in the area and new alignment had a much less impact on the Finger property. Al.

Really wanted to figure this out 100%, but time isn’t on my side.
Joe Tracy is seated at the table to the left of Table 8. Al Poole is left/next to Joe Tracy. Fairly sure Harry Grant is left of Al Poole. George Robertson is seated at Table 8, and I recognize a young, dark haired Peter Helck in the near right. I see the Revere Room sign. Manhattan 30th anniversary of the 1909 VCR maybe?

At the Revere room somewhere. Not sure but I think he’s sitting here….

Many other drivers and mechanicians in the photo as well. Joe Tracy is dead center seated next to Ralph DePalma.
Unfortunately I was unable to identify the luncheon which appears to honor VCR drivers.

In the early 70s, Nyit owned the property and my new boss and his family were invited to live there until they could get settled on Long Island. He took me on a tour… What a beautiful home!

Well I think I found Joe Tracy but that’s about it for answers. Looks like him almost dead center of the photo directly behind the guy with his left arm on the back of the chair. Looking forward to the rest of the answers.

$500 per acre would’ve been tough to turn down back then, and it seems like there was always a few acres or more in these transactions.
You just don’t hear tales these days like William Fingers. Maybe as an older man he found it a whole lot easier getting in & out of horse trough rather than a wooden barrel? Sure you’ll let us know, if possible Art, the conclusion of this. : ) Thanks

Thanks to Howard and The Central Park Historical Society for arranging this get together. Much appreciated the memories and stories of the locals that are rooted here. The historical society’s website is excellent - bethpagehistory.org

The toll keeper pix HK has posted show the keepers outside but there’s always the window frame of that east-facing window at the Mineola Lodge, originally 191 Jericho Turnpike and now 284 Rudolph Road. The owner I met back on 06 Jun 2000 said the wall under the bottom of the frame (under the sill) had been stuffed with ticket stubs when he renovated that window, which would indicate direct access. Hmm? Sam, III

Had such a great time with great people, and so much learned from long-time residents. That’s as good as it gets. Art’s FOIL report of 135 construction will be arriving shortly. I look forward towards the next meet with the same Central Park group. Thank you all for a great summer day.

Sam - I can see a possible sissor gate, hand operated from the kiosk window, but cannot understand the swing gate requiring to exit the kiosk. Was the plan for this gate a buried-cable pull from the kiosk?

Nice seeing the Le Sabre moving! What a low stance! Love the center brake light and the rotating headlights!
