Hi Joe:

Old Courthouse Bridge is the only “highway” bridge (Motor Parkway goes under the bridge)that makes sense “near Great Neck”.

Thanks for the comment and feedback!

Dear Howard, I stopped the ROW near the Old Courthouse Rd bridge the other afternoon to compare the landscape.  I do believe the photo can be the same bridge.  I picked out the area where I believe the photographer would have been, and it is now thick brush.  But it was a bit disheartening.  I first found that part of the parkway when I was about 14 years old.  It was this beautiful remnant, where you could clearly see the parkway and it’s cement extensions (what I called the sidewalks) running up and over hills.  The LIPA trucks have left huge tire tracks of mud.  There was even a truck up there as I was walking around.
I could never tell you enough how much I love your website.  Thanks for sharing so much.

According to the “Images of America” series book of “Floral Park, Nassau County” by Walter E. Gosden, the original Creedmore Spur bridge over Jericho Turnpike was enlarged twice before the final version was removed in 1975. The previous
version was probably removed in 1960-61 time period, when Jericho Turnpike was widened.

Howard, Thanks for sharing, we all saw the Ruxton being restored in Parker’s garage when Long Island Mini Enthusiasts stopped in on Spring Fling 2007. I did not know he died in April this year. The elegant Ruxton seems a fitting tribute to the man. Tom

Howard, Hello and how are you ?  My name is Officer Steve Zacchia and you should remember me as the curator of the Nassau County Police Museum. Saturday I checked in at the Bethpage Restoration at 3:00 so I could help out but was denied entry and told that it was too late..I left dissapointed. I returned Sunday earlier and was able to see all the work that was accomplished. Good job ! It was quite interesting ! Please let me know of any future dates.

Hello Howard Two Gemini Mk2 FJ took part in the 1960 race. #70 driven by one Vic Meinhardt and the #246 Gemini car by Jordon king. Whilst Meinhardt drove sports cars, this was the only race I can find for Meinhardt driving a Gemini FJ. Jordan King continued to race his Mk2 in Events on the East Coast through 1960-1961.
The excellent video clip you have of this race appears to show, 16 seconds in one of the Gemini (furthermost from the camera) and the second 35 second in, involved in the racing incident where the Stanguellini runs over the rear wheel and takes to the air.
The 1961 Vanderbilt Cup race at Bridgehampton this time saw two of the newer rear engined Gemini take part. The Sebring winning Mk3 of Charlie Kolb and the Gemini Mk3A driven by the USA agent for Gemini Cars Racing Cars; Bob Johnson from Ohio. The Kolb Mk3 is here in New Zealand undergoing restoration. Currently I am researching Gemini Racing cars in the USA and any help on photos or information on the Mk2 and Mk3’s at the Vanderbilt cup races to help with the racing histories would be much appreciated. Kind Regards Nigel Russell Auckland NZ. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Thank you to everyone for your help in preserving this part of the Motor Parkway - sorry I could not make it, but I’m so glad a second clean-up has been scheduled - I put it on my calendar as soon as I read about it.

Howard,
As someone who is an advocate of preserving Long Island history, I applaud everyone’s work in uncovering the Bethpage bridge. Could the Peconic Bay Region have your permission to reproduce these photos in a future issue of our newsletter?
The Alco was a hit at the Cutchogue show yesterday.

Very nice pictures.  Takes me back to the early 50’s when I was a boy scout. Our scoutmaster used to take us on hikes on the Long Island Motor Parkway.  We would access it by going up Hicksville Road for a fairly short distance north of Hempstead Turnpike, turn right (east) into a devlopment, go north on one of the streets that ended at the parkway.  We would then head east and hike until we reached the end (can’t remember exactly, must have been a former bridge there). Thanks for bringing back some memories.

Incredible day Howard!! Dee and I are looking forward to the next day on the 29th!

I also offered a possible explanation with a 1953 aerial about the posts uncovered at the end of the property on the LIMP Facebook page.
Also, on Art’s LIMP page, he photographed them a few years ago here;
