    The Vanderbilt Cup Race Courses (1904-1910)

    The six Vanderbilt Cup Races from 1904 to 1910 were held on five different courses on Long Island. The last three races from 1908 to 1910 were partially held on the Long Island Motor Parkway.

    Prominent Women of the Vanderbilt Cup Races

    The daybreak start of the Vanderbilt Cup Races attracted thousands of adventurous men and women who streamed into Long Island from New York City. With hotels and roadhouses overflowing, they camped, gambled, drank, socialized, and established a tradition of revelry that became a hallmark of the event.     Painless Parker and the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race

    Earlier this week I sent Dr. Jack Binder, the historian for both the Town of North Hempstead and Village of Lake Success, a set of photos on the Manhasset Valley section of the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race Course. Dr Binder, a retired dentist, paid particular attention to this photo of Vincenzo Lancia driving his #4 Fiat.

    The Spinney Hill Grandstand for the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race

    The primary grandstand for the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race was at the Start/Finish Line on Jericho Turnpike in Westbury. A second grandstand with a capacity of 500 spectators was built near Spinney Hill in Manhasset.
