    For the 1948 Veteran Motor Club of America Antique Auto Show, prominent artist Peter Helck, then owner of "Old 16", wrote an article on the Vanderbilt Cup Races for the official program.     After the end of the Vanderbilt Cup Races on Long Island in 1910, Centerport on the North Shore of Long Island was an ideal location for William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. to build a new estate. Northport Harbor enabled Willie K. to pursue his love of yachting and, later, flying. (3 comments)

    Views from the Pits of the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race

    One innovation of the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race was the first use of service racing pits in an American automobile race.The 1908 rules allowed only the driver and mechanician to work on the car. However, the rules were modified in 1910 to allow two of the pit crew to replenish water, oil and fuel and to assist in replacing tires. (3 comments)
