    Krug's Hotel, on the north-west corner of Jericho Turnpike and Willis Avenue in Mineola, was a favorite viewing site for the 1904, 1905 and 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Races. This Then & Now look found a rarity- A building on the Vanderbilt Cup Race course that is still standing!

    In the early 1980s, Ron Ridolph photographed the Long Island Motor Parkway from Fresh Meadows to Lake Ronkonkoma. Among the events documented by Ron were the 1983 demolition of the Motor Parkway bridges over the Long Island Rail Road at Mineola and Williston Park/East Williston. Here are Ron's photos of the Mineola LIRR Motor Parkway Bridge before and after the demolition.

    Peter Helck and a Piece of Locomobile Vanderbilia

    In 1905 Roslyn photographer William Pickering captured the #7 Locomobile passing Krug's Hotel on Jericho Turnpike in Mineola. The Locomobile's third place finish in the race was the first time an American car had ever placed in an international competition. Tim Helck, the grandson of Peter Helck, brought back memories of this famous Vanderbilt Cup racer with a recent email.

    Then & Now: Potential Nassau Historical Markers on the Motor Parkway Trail

    Nassau County is currently developing a master plan for a continuous multi-use Motor Parkway Trail. Part of the plan calls for the placement of markers "at the location of historical remnants and will serve as a way to educate the public on the history of the corridor as the original Long Island Motor Parkway..". These are my recommendations for 21 historic markers:
