The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Mark – Eagle Rock is correct, just west of the 800 Flowers building. The parking lot Vanderbilt Drive is the approximate LIMP RoW.

Sam – Tricky section, I believe it went like this; After crossing the RR bridge southbound on the LIMP, the parkway didn’t follow the street grid and headed slightly eastward towards Vanderbilt Drive. Soon after the descending ramp there was a slight right bend before reaching Old Country Road, aligning the LIMP with Vanderbilt Drive. The right bend can’t be seen in Robertson’s 1909 photo but visible in the aerial sending to Howard.
I’ve seen similar distortions at other locations: Just east of Commonwealth Blvd bridge, and just north of 73 Ave bridge in Fresh Meadow.

Mark, there are/were at least two Fairhavens along the LIMP, one at the Jericho Pike crossing and this one on OCR, so, yes, you’re quite right. The other (now Eagle Rock of Carle Place) is on the south side of the Jericho Pike between it and Fairhaven Road, east of Rudolph Drive (and the east end of Rudolph Road). By the way, my 1999 pic of the posts is at <http://sbiii.com/limpkwy3.html#crossing> (scroll down a bit). Sam, III

The apartment complex in the photo, would that be Eagle Rock Apartment formally known as Fairhaven Garden Apartments on Old Country Rd. with the office building next to it 800?

Great stuff. My memories started 60 years ago when my aunt and uncle lived on Foxcroft Rd, which parallels LIMP, and I would visit them. I then moved to Evans Ave and Chaffee St and behind my house was a sump or dump that later in my residence there would realize it was the ROW to the LIMP. This road has been in my life forever. Great to know a younger person gets it with history!!!! Bob

“PHONE GREAT NECK 243w”? I lived on LI almost all my life and my first phone number was CEDARHURST 8307 but I don’t remember EVER seeing a letter after the number. Some sort of Party Line or extension? Anyone? Sam, III

Thanks for sharing a wonderful moment, Joe! All of Ron’s 1983 pix are at <http://sbiii.com/limpbrdg.html#rrbridgs>. I also beg your indulgence. Dave, those posts alongside Vanderbilt Drive North re right on the RoW. The alignment of the LIMP here never made any sense to me. The bridge points ever so slightly to the right (west) of the apartment roof centerline, and the RoW swings to the west just before OCR, yet the RoW berween Pell Terrace and Russell Road is EAST of all this! Doctored aerial sent to HK. The N-S boundary between Mineola and Carle Place at this spot shifted after the LIMP was built but that has nothing to do with this alignment question. HELP! Sam, III

Adding some more (all predicated if my original answers are somewhat correct).
Model: Too confusing, but here’s another possibility
1939 Mack Model CW3G (ser# 1122)
Original purpose of Mack were trolley cars.
Late 30s, early 40s.

Tremendous memories , thank you for sharing with all of us. I have had similar “I was there” memories at other auto related locations , and those locations as well are now no longer there. ( I walked around the abandoned factory in Syracuse , NY where the Franklin car was built , and was there to see it demolished with explosives and caught it on movie film in the 1970s) . Moments in time captured forever in memories that are most important to share.

Great story, Joe! It reminds me of the day in 1971 when the kids on my block at Mitchel Field located the remnants of the Central RR Bridge that still stands today in the woods inside the transition loop from Eastbound Stewart Ave. to Northbound Meadowbrook Parkway.
We thought we had stumbled on some great archaeological find that was sure to make the newspapers! I rode my bike home hurriedly to get my Dad and show him what we’d found.

The Simeone Foundation Museum is an amazing place, as is the attitude behind it. Having a collection like that, and helping people both enjoy and learn from it, is special.

Back around 1947, we would go down on the rail road tracks in East Williston and put a few pennies on the tracks under I U Willets Road bridge and wait for the next train to come along and flatten my pennies—- what are they worth today besides a few memories?? TT

Analysis- There’s 3 bikes, and the boy is swiftly following the other 2. No harm in saying your 1 of the 2 that’s ahead, Fred. Anyone notice the man & woman on the left above on Jericho Tpke, next to the railing? Possibly their parents letting them play down there, but NO tunnel travels what so ever.
From Surveyor Clinton Robertson Photo Album: The Jericho Toll Lodge (Kiosk) in Mineola
I don’t recognize the boy in the photo, but it is after all 59 years ago. Wow! The bicycle with the mudflaps could very well be mine. I almost always had them on my bikes. Although there is no way to prove it, can’t we just say that it’s mine? Well, I’m going to anyway.
Fred
