Need to see Painless Parker for my wisdom tooth….

#4 Fiat driven by Vincenzo Lancia, rounding Northern Boulevard and Valley Road in the 1906 VCR. The building on the right was a jail.

I don’t think I can spot anyone that’s not wearing any head coverings!

No clues (as usual - although I’ve seen the pic before), and it’s a very-pixellated image, but one person (man?) clearly is bare-headed!  You can even see the part in his/her hair.  Sam, III

I have to admit to being a bit bewildered.  Perhaps it’s been covered in detail already but just how much of the Tin Goose was left to restore, please?  From what I saw, it appeared that the body was a complete re-creation.  What about the chassis?  That transverse spring end bolt looks pretty ramshackle (bad pun).  Sam, III

Great article and thanks for the pictures of the Tin Goose and #1044 together. It’s not often that you see cars that rare, outside. Wish I was there. Thanks for sharing your car with fellow car collectors.

The photographer is facing east (maybe slightly northeast) on Northern Blvd. at Valley Road in Manhasset as Vincenzo Lancia in the #4 FIAT is about to go west up Spinney Hill in the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race. Lancia’s mechanician was Ajassa Batista (or possibly Batista Ajassa). I think I read somewhere that the building served as the local jail at the time. As near as I can tell, it looks like everyone is wearing some kind of head covering.

My name is Luis, and I have in my possession a 1906 Syracuse Herald newspaper depicting the Vanderbilt Cup entrants. I’m looking to sell this item because I have no use for it. I came across your blog and thought that this would be the best place to reach people interested on it.

This is such great news! I have confidence that Dr. Jacob’s proposal will continue to move forward as intended, an obvious commodity to local residents and to surrounding communities as well. Yes it took time but time well worth the effort. I have confidence Governor Cuomo will do the right thing. Hats off to the Joby team for making this all happen.

I like the picture of Polaris field, yes you can see and imagine the parkway there!

David, you are correct. At first Union seemed slightly different in the aerial compared to today’s map, pushing me to overlay the image. The first turn east of Winchester would ultimately be delayed a bit further east-paving over the baseball diamond as mentioned. I also had difficulty locating the underpass staircases. It appears the north stairs (just north of the lined parkway posts) was built first, as there’s no evidence of any ground breaking for the south yet.

Sam, the white ‘artifact’ on the north side of the parkway near Wheeler #2 remains a mystery. Today there’s a single tennis court at this location. But the dark blur on the roadway, directly under the artifact could well be a passing vehicle, or part of the tree on the south roadside.

Mystery Foto 23A?  Look carefully at the pic again, about a hundred feet west of Wheeler Farmway Bridge #2, perhaps where today’s Parks underpass is.  Wuzzat?  Sam, III

Mystery Foto #24… The car shown here is the ever popular 1911 EMF “30” two seat racer. This car ran in the Tiedeman Trophy Race as well as Vanderbilt Cup Race in Savannah, GA. in November 1911. The Tiedeman race was, at the time, a more important event than the Indy 500. The EMF driver in both the Tiedeman and the Vanderbilt Cup was Jack Tower.
During the time that the EMF road cars were manufactured I have read that they were second only to the Ford Model T in number of units sold. I believe that the company was bought out by Studebaker.
