The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Cannot identify the car/driver, even using my best zooming methods. Not sure but this could be on the Motor Parkway looking west at the Jerusalem Ave highway bridge in the Hempstead Plains (bridge removed in 1948). This photo was captured during one of the early VCR races (1908-1910). I think I see Long Island Aviation Country Club hangars in the background (under the bridge), but can’t explain the protrusion above the hangar in the photo? Tricky photo Howard. Expecting a correct answer by talented historians in this forum.
From Mystery Foto #17 Solved: Emil Stricker in the #3 Mercedes passing the Jerusalem Avenue Bridge during the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race
I think that’s Emil Stricker driving the #3 Mercedes with Conners as his mechanician heading east having just gone under the Jerusalem Avenue bridge during the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race on October 24, 1908. I think that’s Jerusalem Avenue because you can see the officials stand / press box in the distance through the bridge.

Albert Gifford (1854-1910) was a watchman on E.D. Morgan’s estate, and the 1900 Census lists him immediately following Morgan’s estate employees, so it would have been north of the present day LIE - see the 1906 E. Belcher Hyde Atlas for an approx. location.

John, the 1926 aerial of Bloomingdale Rd is located here. https://lrv.nassaucountyny.gov/map/
The closest I could locate the bridge is here https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1396j0_672hYkvbcNFJInbc1mXNJspD9f&ll=40.73367555877808%2C-73.50545203004624&z=18

We’re viewing west on the LIMP, with the Jerusalem Ave Hwy bridge seen. The Press Box is seen further west on the north side. Upon zooming, believe there’s a 3 on the front grill. The 1908, 09, 10 VC races had a car #3. After comparing each car from the 3 races, I’ll guess the mystery foto is the 10/24/1908 VCR. The car is a Mercedes driven by Emil Stricker.

“As shown in this map and the below 1924 aerial, Bloomingdale Road was eventually extended to the bridge.”
Which map or which Atlas was the source of this picture?

Jerusalem Ave Bridge since we can see the press box through the bridge. I believe this to be the #3 Mercedes driven by Emil Stricker during the 1908 VCR on October 24th.

Mark Schaier beat me to the punch when he mentioned the preponderance of Packards in the 1937 video. I noticed that as well. Packard was a luxury marque. I wonder if that speaks to the relative wealth of New Yorkers, Great Depression notwithstanding, while rural folks drove Fords.
