Vanderbilt Cup Races

I like the race photos from the Aerogram. Photos below bring to mind the Jerusalem Ave Hwy Bridge, ‘Meadowbrook’ Pkwy Bridge, and the straightaway heading east to the Grandstand area.

Frank, A quasi-military organization known as the Irish Volunteers were hired for crowd control purposes at the 1908 Race. Numbering some 600, they wore uniforms and carried rifles,  no bayonets though. Said to have done a better job than previous attempts.

Frank, Unfortunately, Tucker ‘48 never went into production so no orders were filled. The 50 pre-production Tuckers that were made with the prototype Tin Goose were made for the Tucker dealer showrooms. Most, like Tucker 1044, were sold off in the 1950 bankruptcy auction at the Tucker Factory in Chicago.

That luggage is an impossible find, and more amazing, it eventually fell into the right hands. Thank you Mr. Ida for preserving these items after all these years. But I missed the cue, what was “the drama surrounding Preston Tucker?” Did Mr. Aquilina ever receive his Tucker, or just a partial shipment? Howard or Rob, what was the drama behind the car purchase?

Great catch Al! I believe it’s a rifle. He’s not a flagman; I don’t see a flag attached to the top of that ‘pole’. If memory serves, police were hired to help with crowd control.

Howard, the photo captioned….#3 Mercedes in the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, look at the person between the driver and the mechanic behind the Mercedes, is that a soldier with a rifle on his shoulder ?

Wow yet again!  And they are actually nice pieces of luggage!  Very practical!

To Al Prete and all, my mentioning of the many Packard’s parked along 5th Ave. Those Packard’s from the mid to late 30s were the 120 series model, the affordable Packard in the mid price market introduce in 1935, that save the company during the depresssion but tarnish THE PACKARD image.

Mystery Foto #18… The photo location is at Jerusalem Road (now Stewart Avenue in Bethpage) looking south. The buildings shown here are temporary headquarters of Motor Parkway Chief Engineer Brown and the Field Engineer’s Office. Approximate date is May 1908. Officials are scouting location for Motor Parkway ground breaking ceremony which would happen on June 6, 1908.

Very enjoyable to watch and look closely, you can really see how the styling of the cars was changing from the early 1930’s.

Art, The 1910 Motor Parkway Survey Mapbook may show who owned this area prior to 1927. Maps 14 & 15 would show Brentwood.

On another thread, I took a ride up Lake Rd in Great Neck last week an saw that the WK Vanderbilt home had been torn down with a new house on the site. Was there mention of this that I missed?
