The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Howard, thanks for talking to me at the LIMP meeting Thursday night. Regarding discussions the LIMP has had about updating the LIMP exhibit at the Vanderbilt Museum I gave you a draft of a proposed LIMP exhibit for the Museum. The pictures should all be familiar to you as they are taken from your books and this website. I have source information for each picture or drawing on in my files. I will get them to you as soon as I can. I hope this draft will be helpful to you.

The photographer is facing east at the intersection of North Hempstead turnpike (25a) and Jericho-Oysterbay road (route 106). This intersection was part of both the 1906 and 1905 races. The store on the right was McQueen’s store. I’m still working on the make of the touring car. I’ll post again if I figure it out.

I have only been looking at this photo for seconds. My instincts tell me this is most likely the turn at East Norwich. Coming north on what is today Route 106. Turning west onto 25A.

I am so happy I got to meet Marty. I was going to give him a call this weekend to plan my second visit ( since during my visit in the summer, Marty told me if I came back during the fall, he could show me around the entire museum), and when Greg informed me on Monday about Marty’s passing I almost could not believe it. Rest in peace, Marty.
and thanks, Brian, I plan on posting more photos from my past visit in memory to Marty soon on my Instagram - Hotrod_Crazy

Wow! impressive event! However there’s an error by the organizer refering the Packard Predictor as a 1957 is wrong, it’s a 1956, In 1956 Richard Teague who was credited with the design, was head of Packard Division design of the Studebaker-Packard Corp. He had an associate who had help him with the design. In 1956, the Packard design staff was busy finishing off the all new for 1957 line up, but no funding for production.

I think the race is the 1909 Vanderbilt Cup Race on October 30, 1909. The racers are the #8 Alco and the #9 Chalmers-Detroit. I think we’re looking west along the LIMP in area a little east of the start-finish line. A few guesses for the black spots: dirt on the negative or observation dirigibles or entrants in a kite flying contest. I believe the racers are probably on the first or second lap since they started in numeric order and probably would not be that close again throughout the race.

Many years ago Domino’s wanted to open a location on my street. It received a lot of pushback from the community because of all the anticipated traffic caused by all the expected deliveries on the already crowded streets. They responded by equipping the store with a fleet of bicycles and when they first opened, you would see bikes running back and forth all day. Once the weather grew colder, the bikes disappeared and were replaced with mini vans. People felt that they had been duped by Domino’s but it really didn’t matter. Because there were already so many high quality pizza parlors in the neighborhood this Domino’s location was never very busy and it soon closed up and relocated. It would have been interesting to see one of these Tritan A2 delivery vehicles on my street but that never happened.

In races where the track is circular or oval, only left-handed turns are made so wider tires are placed on the right side of the car. In Christie’s case, wide tires had yet to be developed so it was necessary to add an entire extra wheel and tire to gain a larger tire contact patch.
