Very interesting aside about George Robertson’s portrait should be hung in the future county museum at Salisbury Park. At the time this article from the Nassau Daily Review Star was written (1951) the County didn’t even own the property that the future museum would be built on. The Tudor style house with 6 acres was owned by Max Staller from whom Nassau Co. bought it for $98,500 in 1955. It was known and referred to as the Staller Mansion. In 1957 plans were drawn for the Nassau Co. Historical Museum by modifying the room arrangement and added a wing to the north side of the building. This building was finally dedicated on June 15, 1961 by then Co. Exec. A. Holly Patterson as the Nassau Co. Historical Museum. Ten years after this article! It still is one of my favorite buildings to have worked in. As the Librarian at the Nassau Co. Museum Reference Library, in 1985-86 my desk was located on the second floor surrounded by those very archives referred to in the article!

Art, The boy scout camp, not too far from where I live, was originally named The Harkness Training Center and used to train volunteer scout leaders. The property , some 35 acres, was donated to the Nassau County Boy Scout Council by Edward Harkness in 1939.

Thanks Georgeanna for your memories of walking the Motor Parkway. Here are three photos of the scout camp you mentioned. 1946, 1966??? and 1984 (homes were built sometime between 1974 and 1984). Will try to find out the name of the scout camp.

We walked Motor Pkwy in Hollis…not to Albertson though. Our parents really did not allow us to wander too far. Just rode our bikes and walked when we were 10. I lived at 200-08 104 th Ave. in Hollis. Then we moved to Williston Park and surprise, Motor Pkwy again! My husband was a Boy Scout in Albertson and he said there was a scout camp they would go to. I will have to ask him the name again. He said his friend Ron Frost his first job there. He would clear brush and help maintain the camp.

Georgeanna Murphy- That must’ve been an amazing walk with friends towards the Motor Pkwy from Hollis. That’s a long 2mi walk! Do you have any recollection of it to share? I’d be most interested

I lived in Hollis Queens until I was 10. Walked with friends on the parkway. Was so surprised when we moved to Williston Park. Excited to be able to walk and ride bikes on another section of Motor Parkway. Great memories!♥️

I only go for the kudos: the car is a 1905 or 1906 Pope-Toledo. The car can be seen on more photos of VC the 1906 course, present in the Detroit Public Library automotive archive.

Photos of Knoll / Phipps mansion right next door - both owned by Rock Community Church.
I have a ton of pics of this place. I actually met the former owner of this house a few times—Mr. Bradley Martin - he was a super nice guy. Gave me a tour of the inside of the mansion.

Gilded age mansions…..sorry I missed this! Right up my alley!
Regarding the Foxhall Keene Estate, AKA Rosemary Hall, I wonder if this came up at the meeting: It is now currently owned by a church!
Rock Community Church owns this Foxhall mansion, and ALSO owns KNOLL which is a former Phipps Estate literally right next door to Foxhall.
This is confusing on so many levels. Why would any church want to buy spectacular old expensive mansions like this? What are they doing with them? How could their parishioners possibly be ok with this?
I did a little research a while back and discovered that they tried to get tax relief from Old Westbury for these mansions, but were denied.
If anyone has any further info on this please share.

The Mystery Car looks a lot like a 1906 Pope Toledo.
From Mystery Foto #43 Solved: A Pope-Toledo Touring Car at the East Norwich Turn on the 1906 Course
We are looking east on North Hempstead Turnpike (route 25A or Northern Blvd) in East Norwich at the intersection with the Jericho - Oyster Bay Road (today’s route 106). This location was also part of the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup course. The store on the right (S/W corner) was owned by Mr. McQueen. Across the street on the S/E corner was W. F. Johnson’s store. Since I have no idea what car that is, I’ll take three guesses: Peerless; Ford Model B; or Packard Model N.

I’m finally adding my guess on the touring car now. I’m gonna say its a 1906 Pope Toledo type XII. Can anyone post to a picture to help corroborate this? My research matches the lights, grille, steering wheel, and upholstery to this touring car in the picture with the Pope Toledo. So many different makes during this time though. I could be wrong.

My first time at a meeting and I enjoyed it tremendously. Thank you to my cousin Mark Thomas for telling me about it. I’m looking forward to the next gathering. Nice to meet you Howard.
