The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

I remember walking along this section of the LIMP in the early 1960s. But, the houses nearby are still very much within Old Bethpage (hamlet/CDP, hamlet, school district, & postal district). The office buildings for Bethpage State Park have a Farmingdale postal address. There was no Old Bethpage post office until 1965.

Very interesting site! My great uncle Joe Cleary was riding mechanic for Bob Burman in the 1915 Vanderbilt Cup Race in San Fransisco. They were in the #30 Case car which ended up in wrecking after 44 laps. Been doing research on him for years. I have the newspaper article for this race in his scrap book and the token brass medallion & case given to all race participants made by Shreve & Company. Any photos of the #30 would be fantastic as I’ve yet to find one. Thanks, nancy

I’m not sure about what I mentioned to be original roadway. These pics were taken within the last 4 or 5 years but I was there a weekend or two ago and did see one of the posts still there. But not much else.

Brian, you may be right. I have never seen this type of railing any place else along the Motor Parkway

Hi Howard. I’m familiar with this area ( work for National Grid/Lipa ). Maybe the pipe railing was put in for a safety purpose? The ground is level on this side of the parkway now, but perhaps the ground sloped down like the opposite side of the parkway before there were houses built? And to change the subject, I’m looking forward to the next bridge series; when your ready of course.

James, I believe the areas both north and south of Westbury Avenue are both owned by the Village of Westbury.

What about the area south of Westbury Ave? Is that property off-limits to the public? We’ve explored the area on both sides but just up to a few feet in on each side but on the north it looks to be private property and to the south there is quite a bit of fencing.

Congratulations! A well deserved award. I particularly enjoyed seeing how you got the young ones involved. Everyone in our hobby says that we need to do more of this, but you actually do it, and seem to enjoy it. Well done. Dennis Mamchur

Dear Howard-
Always look forward to any info from your emails we receive but the material on the Silver Arrows always throws us in an frenzy. Thank you for that and good luck on the Chrysler resto. That car was waiting for you all these years to get her.
Best of luck to you
Jack

Hi Howard,
Joan Crawfords’ roadster looks to me to be a 1934 Ford rather than a 1933 as stated.
A 1933 Ford has one hood handle in the center of the hood side panel. A 1934 has two hood handles one in the front and one at the rear of the side panel. The photo shows a rear hood handle (the front one is obscured in the photo by the curvature of the front fender. I have owned a 1934 Ford chopped top 3-window coupe hot rod since 1958. Thanks for all your efforts Howard. I truly enjoy your site.
Best regards,
Marty Zickerman

Or tin?

I could hear the excitement in your voice. I’m glad that Walt Gosden had a chance to look at it. Many people are looking forward to seeing that car.

Hesh, you are so The Man. Congrats on the new Leviathan. I love it.
Bonham’s ran a full page ad in NYT today of a BMW 507 for low seven figures.
Not too shabby. Golf this summer for sure.
