When I first saw this picture a couple of years ago I asked the owner of Grand Prix Motors, Westbury Jeep Chrysler, if they had any records or photos of this vehicle. They looked in what they had of Grand Prix’s records from back them but nothing came up. They were just as curious as I but no info was available. I’m especially interested to know if it’s sitting in a barn somewhere!

The group photo of the 6 fellows with the thumbs up in front of the car is the team of craftsman from Automotive Restorations that went to PB . There were at least 10 more back in NJ that worked on the car. They deserve the highest praise for their skill and devotion to return this amazing car back to the condition it was when new. In the 50 + years I have been active in the pre war car collecting scene, they are the top of their field by far. I got to know them in our trips to the shop over the past 2 years and everyone one of them has such a genuine enthusiasm for what they are doing and are so proud of their work.

I’m guessing. It’s either Lee Iococca or Henry Ford, II. Without researching photos of them for comparison, I’d have to guess Iococca. I remember my friend getting a 1964 and 1/2 blue Mustang convertible when it came out. So I’d have to guess, with the NY World’s Fair being on, that the picture was taken at the Fair sometime during the late Spring of 1964.

The Grand Prix Motors tow car is based on Jeep parts. The Effyh race car is Swedish. As to the remarks about VW bugs - 2 were imported in 1949. I am guessing Hoffman had something to do with it. One was turned over to the Metals Division of Dow Chemical Co. The metals VP and his son [now 82 years old] went to NYC and drove it to Michigan. I was 10 when it arrived and sat in it in the VP’s garage.
Dow used it for research and about 1954 sold it to a Division salesman. He had a newer engine put in it and later trade it in on a new Bug. The Michigan-Ohio-Indiana VW Zone office took it. They located the second one being used as a chicken coop. It still had the 1949 engine. The 2 cars were combined, restored and used for VW displays at auto shows.
Hoffman had looked them over and thought they had no future in the American car market. The German government offered VW to Henry Ford and he thought the same.

The Mustang is a 260 V-8 convertible. It was red with a white top. The 1964 Pavillion is round like the 1939 Rotunda was.

Sitting on the rail is Henry Ford II, at the unveiling of the Ford Mustang at the Ford pavilion at the 1964 NY World’s Fair. Official unveiling of the Mustang was April 17, 1964, so the picture would be that date or one very close to it. Connection to the Motor Parkway (albeit it not in a positive way), Robert Moses was President of the NY Worlds Fair.

Who paid for the bridge that was built in 1931? Was that section of the Parkway closed during the building of the bridge or did Vanderbilt work with NYS creating a detour through the NSP construction zone?

New York State paid for the bridge. There was a detour through the Northern State Parkway section during construction.

I had a hunch this was the “1964 Worlds Fair” and that’s definitely a “Ford” mustang. Putting those two phrases together into an image search gave me that exact picture with the caption “The launch of the Ford Mustang at the 1964 World’s Fair with Henry Ford II”
My cousin had one of those in the ‘60’s. Riding in that was the first time I ever went 100 MPH.

That’s Henry Ford II in front of the Ford Pavilion at the N.Y. World’s Fair on April 17, 1964 for the debut of the new Mustang. A week later on opening day, I remember “riding” in one as it took you through the Ford exhibit. Note the full-size Ford convertible in the glass enclosed runway at the top of the photo. As a marketing strategy, most, if not all, of those were replaced by Mustangs by opening day.

The starter was added around 15 years ago in Europe. The Black Beast still can be hand cranked.
