Thanks, Ed!  I can’t help but wonder how many of us “old crocs” drove, rode, or played on the LIMP and never even took a single picture.  It was just “there”.  Sam, III

When I was a kid my parents took me to the car museum. I clearly remember the arched roof of the building. Seeing the pictures bring back good memories when we visited the museum. Ironically I currently own one of the vehicles that was in the museum.

A Christmas softball gift! Remembered this one from a few different sources…
As per Vanderbiltcupraces.com;

“1887: Alva (far right) on a trip up the Nile with her children (9-year old Willie K standing in the middle), her husband William K. Vanderbilt (white outfit far left with 10-year daughter Consuelo by his side) and family friend Oliver Hazard Perry (O.H.P.) Belmont (sitting with cigarette far left). In 1895, after 20 years of marriage, Alva divorced Vanderbilt. Nine years after the Nile cruise, she married O.H.P. Belmont.”

Happy Holidays to all!!

I wish everybody a merry Christmas and a very, very happy and healthy New Year too (from a very green and almost spring-ish Holland!)

Ulmann was a friend of my father’s and gave me a copy of his history of Mercedes (which, naturally, I can’t locate just now) but I was quite sure his given name was “Alec”, not “Alex”.  His handwritten signature agrees; go with it.  Sam, III

The car looked remarkably good in 1986. What a nice find this is! Due to poor storage during the 1990’s and early 2000’s the car really took a beating as you told us Howard at your presentation in Riverhead this year. Do you think you would have restored it if you owned it in 1986? I think that would be a much more difficult decision at that time. Wishing you Happy Holidays!

Fascinating map Howard, thanks. I lived on Stuyvesant Square when I took the pictures of Mrs. Chrysler’s Imperial back in ‘86, in a late-19th century brownstone next door to St. George’s Episcopal Church. It’s on Second Avenue between 15th and 17th Streets, and it is very cool to see it here. There are two, two-block long streets that flank the square and it was great fun, when people asked for my address to reply, “3 Rutherford Place”. Fine times in a great city.

I’ll take a Manhattan in Nuvlolari’s “small cocktail cup”, please. British Pathé News is another great source to mine for old newsreels.

The photo shows the Renault with no.10 driven by François (Ferenç) Szisz at the start of the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup race, held on October 14th. His mechanic was Sergey Dimitievich. Other persons on the photo are Willam K. Vanderbilt talking to a for me unknown person. The man bending towards the car seems to be Fred Wagner. Szisz would eventually finish on 5th place, more than a lap behind winner Hémery.

I have game cards for a Teddy R. Bear hunt game. It appears this game has no cards ? Have you seen any other Teddy R Bear Hunt games?

Pat, I don’t know of any other games. Here is a link to information on “Teddy’s Bear Hunt” made by Bowers & Hard:

Absolutely incredible, with amazing quality considering the equipment they had to work with!  What’s more amazing is all the docks and ships in every square inch of waterfront, east and west.

I believe that is a Renault in 1905 on October 14.  If so it would have been driven by Francois Szisz with Mechanician George Dimietrievitch along for the ride.  In the photo it appears Willie K is sporting his goggles on his hat near the RF tire.  As far as anyone else in the crowd, I will have to wait to see what others will have to add.  At first I though perhaps Teddy Roosevelt was hunched next to the driver at first glance but the more I looked the less I agreed with myself.

Thank you for the link. From the overhead shot of City Hall move a little north to Foley Square. Neither 40 Centre Street (Federal Court) nor 60 Centre Street (NY State Supreme Court) are there, although it appears that the foundation for 60 Centre is being set; the courthouse opened in 1923. Move a little south from City Hall to the tip of City Hall Park (Park Row and Broadway). The old Federal Building, which housed the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, can be seen. Move southeast from City Hall. The Municipal Building at the end of Chambers Street is clearly visible, and just south of that was the terminus of the el that went over the Brooklyn Bridge.
I’ve got a whole map to study. I was a “hack” (cab driver) in the City when I was finishing college and, later, while I was in law school.

Hello all. My last comment here pertained to a RR spur that appeared to intersect with the LIMP let’s say N/O the overpass of Colonial Springs Rd. According to Wikipedia, there was a brickyard named Wyandance Brick and Terra Corp. They utilized this RR siding to transport the bricks to the mainline. It also states their was a forest fire that destroyed the plant in 1893. A 1941 map of this area shows this brickyards property just N/W of the LIMP. If this siding was in operation during the construction of the LIMP, perhaps some accommodation was worked out at the time.
