The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Here is a pic of me at the ‘64 World’s Fair.

I worked at the’64 Wolds Fair at Avis Antique Rent-A-Car ride right near the Ford pavilion. We had to help the riders on and off the half scale Model T replicas. But we also had to get the two cylinder motors running with a rope and a pull start. Some people had trouble getting them started and idling so I became the “go to guy” for the start ups using a match stick to raise up the idle speed during warm up. It was a fun job and I was at the fair nearly every day from the opening to closing day. Quite a memory

Yesterday was not the first time the Motor Parkway had problems with snowfall. On Jan. 25, 1926 Mark Wightman of Greenlawn was hired to clear the Parkway of snow from the Huntington Lodge to Ronkonkoma Lodge for which he was paid $30.00. The next year on Jan. 24, The Parkway had the Hempstead Contracting Co. plow snow off the Parkway between Rocky Hill Rd. and the Huntington Lodge over a period of six days using two trucks at a cost of $158.25. Anyone know if the NYC Dept of Parks clears their section in a timely fashion ?

So happy that my son Gram got to participate in the auction he assisted in building and even won his small lot of signs with a winning bid.

I remember it well! I was there on Opening Day. I had not yet turned 17 and only had a learner’s permit but my Mom let me take her car (alone) and skip school (it was on a Wednesday, I believe). The weather was overcast and rainy but I had a great time. There had been threats of civil rights demonstrations and union-busting demonstrations so there were very few people there. I went into every building and on every ride with absolutely no lines anywhere. Even had a beer with my fake proof. What a memory!

From Mystery Friday Foto #8 Solved: "Chrysler's Chrysler"- 1937 Chrysler Imperial C-15 LeBaron Town Car
This rare 1937 Chrysler Imperial barn find was found in 2012, rotting away for decades at the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s garage. The Chrysler was fully restored 2 years later by Steve Babinsky’s dream team in Lebanon, NJ, and is fully operational today. This one-of-one find now sits at Howard Kroplick’s Hempstead Harbor garage

Still have my injected mold brontasaurus from Sinclair exhibit.
Article overlooks that there was a Toyota Corona on display in the Japan pavilion.
Took one look at that car and thought that company will never succeed in the US????

Bob, I would like to see your model photo. Assuming you are using Windows, open the large file in the Paint program, then on the top tab select File / Save As, select Jpeg, and give the file a new name. That should reduce the file size.

Well, this was Cedrino during the 1908 Briarcliff race, so he wasn’t moustachless then. Also he already had a moustache during his first race in the US, the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup race. So I doubt if he was ever without it during his stay in the US, which ended tragically not long after the 1908 Ormond-Daytona Beach races.

I was 11 when the Fair opened and every visit was an adventure. I remember Carby Carburetor was an animated spokesperson for Chrysler and if you gave your name and address, he sent you a postcard. The Better Living Pavilion had Frisbee demonstrations and the famous hot rod, Li’l Coffin on display. I got my Social Security number at the US pavilion and if you handed in a dime, they would irradiate it and make it radioactive. It was placed in a small plastic disk as a souvenir. Hard to believe they would hand out radioactive trinkets to eagerly awaiting kids. I have so many fond memories of the Fair. I never wanted it to end. It was a time of great hopes and dreams.

Wow what great follow up information. I want to thank everyone who has added to this photo. I do have a tendency towards Steve Lucas’ comment. Why? When I purchased this photo it came with 3 other from the Briarcliff Race. I was informed the Cedrino at one time (early on) drove without the mustache. I guess still a mystery. Thank you all.

The link is of the model of the Chrysler turbine car that I personally obtained when I visited the Chrysler pavilion at the Chrysler Pavalion at the 1964 World’s Fair with my mother. The model has emotional value to me because my mom was with me when I obtained it. Another exhibit that stands out to me was Michelangelo’s Pieta. Then there was no plexiglass shield protecting it.
The fair was actually in Corona, where I was born in 1950. The people of Corona were not happy that they changed the name of the location.
This is a great article of the 1964 World’s Fair. Thank you, Howard, for including it in this weeks newsletter.
Oh well ... I tried to include the picture I have of the model, but an error message pops up because it’s too large. If anyone knows how I can include it, please advise

Memories of the 1964 World’s Fair as seen by a 15-year old:
Belgian waffles, Pieta, video phones connected to California, my older sister working at the Pakistan Pavilion and, of course, seeing the Mustang for the first time.
Enjoy,
Howard

Thanks, Greg, for the softball for us oldtimers. That’s the 1937 Chrysler Imperial C-15 Town Car with body by LeBaron. The garage is at the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum. The date is probably late 2011 or early 2012, just prior to it being transported to another garage at 55 Lumber Road in Roslyn.
