The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

To be 100% correct, the Vanderbilt Cup was acquired in California by the Museo Nicolis in Verona (Italy), where it is on display. The Alfa Romeo Museum didn’t play any role in the acquisition.

That mystery car is certainly a mystery to me.I think the license plate is Florida, and has a radar antenna or some kinda tracking device.

I did get thrown a bit by the Jersey Shore reference, thinking I was being lead somewhere else and seeing what looks like sandy ground…..so searched Amatol-Atlantic City NJ to see if they had a similar scoreboard and NO, not there. So I believe it’s Indy. But did find two sites of Amatol, one is photos the other the best board track newsreel type films I ever recall seeing of high speed board racing.

The driver is Ralph DePalma, the car is a Mercedes GP car which finished second in the 1914 French GP, was sold to DePalma and shipped just before unpleasantries of WW I, then won the 1915 Indy 500…...looking at the scoreboard the track is Indy.
“On 2 October 1912, he won the Vanderbilt Cup race in Milwaukee (Wisconsin) driving the “Grey Ghost”, a Mercedes 37/90 hp racing car built in 1911….On 26 February 1914, DePalma won the Vanderbilt race again with the “Grey Ghost”. This time the race was held in Santa Monica (California). In 1915, this was followed by probably his greatest triumph, the victory in Indianapolis”

Sorry for the delay in responding. Wow - I just opened this blog post and saw my tour! I usually always open the blog the day it comes out but must have missed it.
We did the tour by traveling by car to the 14 or so sites I had outlined ahead of time. More tours to come since time wouldn’t permit more and a few friends who had expressed interest couldn’t make it.
About the cutout, it was located soon after the Parkway curved north. I’ll be back there soon and get dimensions for Sam and more details. I’m at the location every few months and this was the first time seeing it so whatever it is was recently done. Thanks for your interest.

As someone who grew up in westbury, this is great news. I wonder what the other historical places are. I’ll have to grab a cow of the Westbury Times I guess.
The Westbury grandstand was a bit further east on Jericho Tpk, closer to powells lane so that might have been a better location but very glad marker is being done. Don’t want to complain about exact spot!

You can see the duffle bag behind Chevrolet, to the right, in Paul’s photo, and you can just make out the same bag in the photo that I linked to. It’s to the left of Chevrolet’s shoulder.

For the linked J. (mustn’t forget the “J.”!) Walter Christie bio, the picture on Guinea (Woods) Road-cum-Glen Cove Road just north of Jericho Turnpike, I cooked up this similar view:

Let me add to the chorus. Exactly where was this aberration? What are its dimensions and how deeply was it cut? Cutting concrete that precisely is pretty well nigh impossible. The bottom appears freshly exposed; if ‘twere an old hole, say where a stick rotted out, the bottom would look as aged as the road surface - and it would be full of debris, especially in the inaccessible vertex. Aliens! Photoshop (and it’s not even 01 April!)? Sam, III

From Lee Stohr:
Hi Howard,
This is a great photo that I’ve never seen before. It shows Louis Chevrolet next to the Christie V4 engined-racer that he drove at Ormond Beach, January 27, 1906. Chevrolet drove the Christie in a 100mile race called the Minneapolis Trophy. Car troubles put him out at around half distance. Chevrolet’s trip was not wasted however, he ended up driving the 200hp Darracq V8 and setting a one mile world record for gasoline cars.
In the background you can see Walter Christie in the leather jacket.
The photo must have been taken at the same time as the one shown in this link http://theoldmotor.com/?p=156415 ( see the story that I did for David Greenless Old Motor. )
Chevrolet participated in the 1905, 08,09 & 1910 Vanderbilt Cup races.
Best regards,
Lee Stohr

I will call him Louis Chevrolet. He participated in the Vanderbilt cup in 1905, 1908, 1909, 1910.

Nice capture. That’s the real Louis Chevrolet caught unsuspecting, none of this smiling paparazzi BS. Somewhere in the south, probably FL

That looks like Louis Chevrolet, who participated in four Vandebilt Cup Races: 1905, 1908, 1909, and 1910. Based on the unusual helmet and goggles that he seemed to favor in 1908, I’m guessing that year. Looks to be a palm tree in the background, so I’ll guess Florida, maybe Daytona?

The driver is Louis Chevrolet, and the photograph was taken at Ormond Beach Florida in January 1906. The car is the front wheel drive Christie machine. Beautiful, razor sharp, early photograph!
