The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

An auditorium that large is most likely at SUNY Stony Brook. I can’t read the details but dotted lines on the water are most likely ferry routes (or spilled popcorn or chum lines). There’s a similar 5’ long 1928 soils map at the offices of SPLIA (Society for the Preservation of LI Antiquities) in Cold Spring Harbor which I documented at <http://sbiii.com/limpmaps.html#soilsmap>. There’s also a large WWI map at the Cradle of Aviation Museum which I document further down on that same page, <http://sbiii.com/limpmaps.html#WWILIMap>. By the way, what is that wild little jog at Bedford Avenue in Hauppauge (detail “n” on the first map - <http://sbiii.com/limppix/soilmapn.jpg>) all about? Sam, III

Not a comment (other than “WOW!”) but could we please have a higher-resolution shot showing the year of the NY license plate (or just the date itself) and the story of how the car got from LI to Berlin? Sam, III

From the photos, it would appear to have little rust or corrosion on the body proper or wear to the upholstery. The mechanical parts, that is the big question. Corrosion from the old oil is a problem that will have to be addressed.

Map is in the auditorium of Mepham High School in North Bellmore. Some clues leading my investigation were mentions of North Bellmore and North Merrick on the bottom part of the frame and those villages being highlighted on the map. A good friend’s kids graduated from Mepham - have to ask them about it.
Dotted lines would be ferry crossings.
I see Plainview shown as Plain View, didn’t do much more examining.
Airfields: 9 (possibly 10)
Flushing Airport, Jamaica Airport, Floyd Bennett Field, Mitchell Field, American Airport (a.k.a Seversky Airport), Islip Airport, Brentwood Airport, Patchogue Aiport, Suffolk Airport (Southampton) and my possibility making 10 would be the Montauk Seaplane area (also may have been marked by a star).
From documentation sent to Howard the map was bought by the Merrick/Bellmore School District (from the Waldorf Astoria?) for placement in the newly constructed Mepham HS in 1937. It was painted in canvas on off-site sections. Restoration was performed in 2007 by Sherman Art Conversation with almost $40,000 donations having been received.

I just watched this episode OnDemand ( - commercials ). I guess you had to let Mr. Ford win, Howard lol. Can’t be re-writing history now. Had no clue that the Dodge Bros. ( and countless others ) succumbed to the Spanish Flu. Very watchable overall, looking forward to the next episode.

Great picture. I was away, now catching up on LIMP posts. This one is a bit confusing. Based on where this bridge was and if we are looking west why can’t we see the meadowbrook pkwy? It was right next to it.
After some research I might have answered my own question. Seems like the southernmost portion of the meadowbrook was opened in the 30s but the northern sections got delayed and didn’t open until the mid 50s.

According to an article in the “Motoring” section of Brooklyn Life (Oct 3rd, 1908 page 22): “The idea of a depressed supply station is to give the spectators in the grandstand a good view of the drivers and mechanics while they make their lightning tire changes…..The idea has never before been done in this country and the Vanderbilt Cup Commission…is sparing no expense to have the innovation introduced properly and to add still another attraction to these great contests.

The view of the “Mayan Ruins” got me curious, so I went back to my old coverage of same from 31 Jan 2008, at <http://sbiii.com/limpbrdg.html#gardcity> and added a current satellite view with the two abutments showing amazingly well. Sam, III

Rather late in the game but I just noticed the E. J. Korvette location noted above and beg to differ. As I recall, and I’m pretty sure of my ground here, it was on the south side of Westbury Avenue, roughly opposite Park Avenue, where the Marriott and Hilton are today but more likely where that big, empty parking lot is now, just east of the LIMP RoW and west of the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Carle Place. Glad everyone enjoyed this one and had to scratch their heads a bit. Have to thank Jeff, Paula’s son who forward the pics first to Paula who in turn sent to me. Paula’s husband Dennis is a Motor Parkway fan and has accompanied me on my tours. Now we wait for this week’s photo.

Although my mystery guess was incorrect, it is great to see the original LIMP stretch alongside the Polo Fields as it was. A rare outside view of the Polo Fields that most probably have never seen. This one is priceless. Hats off to Art, Paula, and Jeff for producing this super rare image.

Great photo captures, Frank Mendyk! That’s ABSOLUTELY an embedded chunk of LIMP pavement. We all have come across enough parkway fragments to know. Glad you’ve taken on the task of “The LIMP Photographer”.

Smokestack? I don’t see no {expletive deleted} smokestack - and I worked in the Oxford Pendaflex building (ex-Curtiss plant) in 1956! Oh, yeah - NOW I do. That’s a gas holder, by the way, not tank; the upper sections rise and fall with the contents. Sam, III
