The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

What a great picture! I suspect this is in Bethpage? And the train might be the Babylon branch? As too, the trains purpose? Well since Autos, were in their infancy? It might have been simply to observe that great race! This website is nothing short of fabulous! And since this generation, has grown so non Committed, to todays “cookie cutter” vehicles! Your doing a great service, by reminding them of how IT ALL GOT STARTED! My era, was the 1950s , I,m addicted to ww, tires , chrome, and two tone colors! But all cars Amaze me, And the Black beast, Never fails to greatly interest, all who see it…..Just to hear it run is an adventure! I have a picture, of a little boy in it, (In Hallockville! ) I suspect that boy, will remember that day , all his life!

Dead Man’s Curve in the 1908 race. Central RR line used for shuttle service and bricks and lumber to build Garden City and Levittown. Axel Peterson’s #M36 Rainer battled William Haupt’s #P41 at the Deadman’s Curve. OK i lifted that from the Deadman’s Curve blog, but it is a cool place to hike and explore and one of my favorite places along the way !

Edith Klarmann:
Thanks again…
Old Broad Hollow Rd… the widening and straightening—straightening, in particular, took the route of the Trolley Line right of way, with the Trolley passing in front of our house (though several years before my time) continuing all the way to Conklin Street (corner of former Republic Aviation), then West to Farmingdale, with a jog to the LIRR station, then to Main and South on Main till it again joined Broad Hollow Rd before Amityville.

Frank - thank you for the info and it always seemed like the homes were built on the former roadway. The items that made me second guess it were the maps from the county that outlined the proposals for Motor Parkway Trail Program (arc swung out further) and locals that have mentioned seeing items in the backyards of Piper Lane.

Mystery Foto Mystery… Solved!
I can explain how geometry and dogged Googling can explain the reported confusion… stay with me!
While the Brooklyn Eagle photo captions says “the view is eastward toward the Shearman estate”, it doesn’t actually assert the estate can be seen in the cropped image; my conclusion then is the light-colored buildings in the upper right must be the old Minton estate ‘Brookwood’ property (since 1977 the site of the Gates at North Hills condo, bounded on the west by NHP Road, the north by the NSP, on east by Old Courthouse Road and on the south by the LIMP).
Maps and photos dating from 1932 through 1966 show Brookwood as having two white-walled buildings set at a right angle to each other, which can be confirmed if you zoom in massively on the Eagle photo. In contrast, the Shearman compound is more in-line and dark hued.
Today, the Gates entrance way is just steps south of the Exit 26 e.b. on-ramp, while the Buckley property is 7/10ths of a mile farther to the east, and therefore does not actually appear in the photo.
My apologies for overlooking the above when viewing Mr. Berliner’s maps; below are the site links that provided the information supporting my new understanding.
Thanks, Jim

TA, RA! My page 8 is now restored, covering the Mineola-Carle Place segment; including 284 Rudolph Road, the MIneola Lodge, in 2000, as is my Central Nassau continuation Page 1, covering Russell and Old Country Roads in 2004. WHEW! (Some of the thumbnails are still awful but the pix behind them are good and I’m not up to redoing the t/ns yet). On to Hike VII!

My partners & I have a bar in San Francisco that is Named ‘Capt. EDDIE RICKENBACKERS A.E.F.’
We have been collecting his memorabilia over the years & are looking for any prints or footage that may be put on display.
I thoroughly enjoyed scrolling through the 1915 exposition footage.
We also have a restaurant named Chief Sullivan’s after the Fire Chief Dennis Sullivan who perished in the great disaster of 1906.
I’m proud to honor the memories of heroes from our past & will do all I can to preserve & protect their legacy.

Haven’t yet explored the RoW dirt path section but it looks promising. I believe the parkway on the Sugar Maple side rests on the house’s foundations and not in their backyards. Definitely worth a closer look there as well.

Adding to the mystery, the photo was taken in July with dense foliage, where one can’t see the Motor Pkwy east (or west) of New Hyde Park Rd heading towards the Old Courthouse Rd bridge, except the area that was cleared for 3003 NHP Rd construction.
