The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

This is amazing, incredible, unbelievable and whatever else I can say about the work that has been done. It’s like a big puzzle that has to be put back together with no chance of a mistake at all. Seeing pictures is nothing compared to you seeing and watching all of this work be done each time you go.

So many great comments and I don’t even have a word to say about it, darn it, because I didn’t watch it. Now I really want to see it, some way I will. I’m still asking for help, as I said on Sunday or I’ll just have to wait until there’s a rerun online, which may not be for awhile.

I cannot begin to tell you how much Maddy and I enjoyed watching you on Velocity’s AmeriCarna last night.
You are a natural television personality with an incredible knowledge and passion for Long island’s history with the automobile.
I learned a lot from the program and gained a better understanding of your enthusiasm for your historic vehicles.
Enjoy your continued success. You should be considered for an EMMY!!!

Thanks so much for the heads up on your website for this great series on cars and such.
I watched everyone twice as it was repeated at 11:00 PM. Seeing the Vanderbilt Cup episode
was great for us Long Islanders !!!! Great job with Ray Evernham and his crew.
As a second item of great interest was to see the progress of Walter Chrysler’s Chrysler in the shop now being painted and put together. What a project and hope to see it in Roslyn very shortly. I sincerely wish great success to you on the above and hope to see you at the ALPCA meet at the Massapequa Elk’s lodge on Saturday April 12th, 2014. Best Regards Again !!!!!!!

Great presentation and information on Americarna last night. This looked (to me) in large part to be most of your research and what you have been presenting. You and the ALCO presented a historical picture that I do hope will be noticed by others and put Long Island’s prior racing history in a place it should be not forgotten and hidden away.

Nice job Howard. I really enjoyed the show. We need to find a way to get the Vanderbilt Cup trophy out of that cabinet and back on display on Long Island.

Great show. I have only been alive for 46 years, but i am so impressed with Long Island’s History. The segment on Jericho Turnpike in Westbury was filmed behind my childhood house. It got me searching for old maps to show my 11 year old daughter the roots for the races and how the start finish line was on Jericho Turnpike where I grew up. Keep up the good work. Most of the Google links I found lead to your site.

Harry, you may be right. Here is a link of the type of wood that they used for fence posts in the early 1900s.

The posts found along the LIMP in Old Bethpage are locust I think. Cedar would not last that long. The ones still standing are still pretty strong.

Thanks for being late, it gave me a chance to give you the right answers. How did those posts last so long?

These guys are deep in the woods. Past experience has taught me to conduct these types of investigations prior to April, or you will be eaten alive by all types of insects. Otherwise you’ll need a suit of armour. Amazing how the 100+ year old cedar posts have endured the test of time!
