Outstanding work, Brian!  Well, at least I was in the right general area; I KNEW it wasn’t Salisbury or Levittown.  Structure?  WHAT structure?  Never even occurred to me that the barrier wall was a “structure”.  These Mystery Fotos are such grand fun; thanks, Al and Howard.  Sam, III

Patrick - the entire chase was loaded with fine cars, though I prefer the 69 Charger tail lights instead. Steven’s GTO also made an introduction, and that dark green VW Beetle appeared 6 times! It must’ve been popular then

Sad to hear about the homeless in this area. I’ve yet to visit here and always thought this tract to be swampy and uninhabitable; satellite images always show the foliage well flourished throughout. Thank you Lee for the update.

From Art: Thanks Al.  I know Gasser Avenue was named in honor of the Gasser family that owned a nearby farm.  Roy C. Gasser was a founder of Plandome, where he and his wife lived.

I think this photo could be looking west from Shelter Rock Road. Growing up in North New Hyde Park, it sure looks like what I remember of that location in the 1950’s. The flat, open area to the right of the LIMP could be the old Links Golf Course. The structure on top of the abutment was a barricade built to deter automobile usage after abandonment in 1938.

Art, The parkway’s secretary at the tine of the sale to Suffolk County was Roy C. Gasser. I’m trying to tie him to Gasser Ave./Old Westbury Rd.

From Art Kleiner: Lee, yes, I’ve encountered homeless (or signs as to where they’ve been) a few times in my explorations!  Sad.

From Art: Thanks Brian and Sam - I’m working on splitting the entire map into sections (probably 20 or so) and will create an entirely new post with a link between this post and the new one.  In addition, anyone wanting me to e-mail you the entire map please send along your e-mail address.  Thanks.
PS: Sam, I haven’t forgotten your request a few months back concerning doing some follow-up for you.  Continues to be on my to-do list which is tending to grow in retirement!

It would be interesting if this car were in fact purchased by a museum, as today many museums, especially car museums, are struggling financially.
Regarding the new owner sharing it, I have seen enough of this car over the last year to satisfy me for perhaps the rest of my life!

Well that is final now, the next car we all will have to look for is the Pontiac four door hardtop LeManns used in the Astoria chase scene in “French Connection”  ....why wasn’t that car a then popular GTO?

Sadly, today there are homeless people living in the woods of those remaining 112 acres.  Walking along the old Perimeter Road southbound on Mitchel Field east of the Marriott hotel heading towards Hempstead Turnpike and the Santini area on the other side, you may encounter some of them as I did.
