The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Has anyone ever come across a possible real estate connection between Willie K. and realtor S. Osgood Pell?

Congratulations on 18 years! I’m pretty sure I have been following this site from the beginning, which makes it pretty much the ONLY site that has ever been able to hold my interest for more than a few visits.
Great content, excellent writing—and your enthusiasm oozes out of every page!

Howard. Congratulations, your knowledgeable and informative contributions not only on Long Island automotive related history but international as well and has rightfully earned you the number one online rating in this field. Allowing the general public to actively participate on your site is especially appreciated encouraging viewers to contribute material that ordinarily would not see the light of day. Looking forward to many more years.

I think that might be Emanuele Cedrino driving the 1908 Fiat Cyclone at the Briarcliff Race in Briarcliff, NY. His mechanician for that race was David Bruce-Brown, who drove in the 1910 and 1911 Vanderbilt Cup Races.

Congratulations on this milestone! It has been such a great pleasure to part of the VCR family and to get to know Howard, Roz and Greg. It is even more exciting to know that my nephew, Gram, is part of the team. From our first meeting with Howard with the Black Beast at a car show in Great Neck, we knew that we had found a good friend and a great place to share our love of the Long Island Motor Parkway. Howard has been such a powerful mentor to Gram. Looking forward to many more years of friendship.

Congratulations, Howard, Roz, Greg and Gram on the 18th anniversary of vanderbiltcupraces.com. The contributions the website has made to preserving the history of the Motor Parkway and the Vanderbilt Cup Races, as well as many other facets of automobile history and that of Long Island in general are much appreciated by many and otherwise would have been lost. And let’s not forget the others including Al Velocci, Bob Miller and Sam Berliner for their contributions and websites early on. And the many contributors by way of providing comments each and every week!
My own Motor Parkway website started in 2004 but couldn’t keep up with the amount of information available and even though it might still be out there somewhere hopefully it also contributed to the knowledge of our favorite roadway and races early on.
Its been my pleasure initially being a reader and casual contributor and for the last 6 years authoring the “Kleiner’s Korner” column. Speaking of which I’ll definitely include the 100th anniversary of vanderbiltcupraces.com in my February, 2108 hundred year look back of the Motor Parkway. But many more columns to write before then! Was the attached the first post, Howard?

frankfemenias: thanks for the image. I viewed it but missed several things, like the movement of the house.
However, I disagree with the home being no longer distinguishable from the way it was built. While we may see this as a historic monument to be preserved it is someone’s house! I love how they matched the original window style, and somewhat brought back the porte-cochre.

Greg, A correction regarding the construction of the Ronkonkoma Lodge. It was not a pre-cut bungalow but built by LeRoy Vollgraff “replicating the Huntington Lodge”. See page 50 in my book.

I believe it’s Motor Pkwy’s Lake Ronkonkoma Lodge as a home in 2006, after it was moved 50ft NW away from the Motor Pkwy RoW in 1938. The home is extant but has since been upgraded and no longer distinguishable

My father was a Church of Christ minister who always liked cars. He put in his order for a Tucker which of course he never received. I was 8 years of age at the time & one of the Tucker promotion items was a cigarette box with a replica (I don’t know the scale, but I think it was close to 1/24) of the Tucker 48. I wanted it sooooo bad, but because it was a cigarette box & cigarettes were bad, Dad said NO!

T.M., thanks for the comments. I was fortunate to spend three hours with Randy Ema in August 2024 discussing #2448 and reviewing his extensive files. I haven’t delivered mail there in 25 years, but is it the toll hose in Roslyn, just west of Roslyn Rd in East Williston. Must,ve been built in teens. I don.t think it was moved.
It looks very differnt from what I remember
