The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Any resemblance to my FIAT 500 is purely coincidental! I have a hunch my entire 100HP engine would fit comfortably inside any one cylinder of that monster! Sam, III

DVR alert - my friend Howard Kroplick and his amazing ALCO racer will be featured on the next episode of “Americarna” on Velocity. If you don’t already know Howard’s car is a 1908 machine that won the 1909 and 1910 Vanderbilt Cup races ( VanderbiltCupRaces.com) and competed in the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911. This car has racked up numerous concours awards and was driven by Emerson Fittipaldi during pre-race ceremonies for the 100th anniversary Indianapolis 500 as well as by Howard during the 2012 IMS Legends Day event.

Howie:
Very impressive segment. (I hope I can get Americarna out here on the Left Coast, on Direct TV). I was unaware that Walter Chrysler actually worked for Alco when they were manufacturing cars, and that’s what led him to go into the automobile manufacturing business. . . . .very interesting.

If I recall my history correctly, in his early career Mr. Chrysler worked for the American Locomotive Company. and one has to wonder if he had the opportunity to work on the “Beast” or other Alcos.

I’m sending a sister photo of last week’s mystery in hopes of determining location. I did notice there is still a house standing today near 368 W 53 st., (that’s been stucco’d), that strongly resembles the house in the backdrop. Cheers.

I think you men were near the OBVR bridge (Clody). I’ve seen those wood posts as ROW boundary fencing for the LIMP in some of the old photos. And the wood posts are in a straight line.

Location is Old Bethpage. Might Al and Sam be looking at fence posts to keep animals (and maybe humans) off the roadway.

It looks like the cleanup crew at the Old Bethpage LIMP location in 2006.
The wooden posts were original markers along the parkway.
