This is the cover illustration for an automobile trade journal “Motor’s Gallery Of Motoring”, that was published soon after William K. Vanderbilt, jr. set the land speed record of 92.30 MPH on January 27, 1904. It shows Willie K. in his Mercedes, the “Ormond Flier”, which he drove at Ormond / Daytona Beach, Florida, breaking Henry Ford’s recently established record. The caption under the illustration reads “Holding the speed record for this earth, the champion seeks other worlds to conquer”. This was quite prophetic since Willie K. went on to establish the Vanderbilt Cup Races later that same year.

This was easy because I sort of cheated and looked at the Vanderbilt Cup Races Blog for February 11, 2014 - It’s Wm. K. Vanderbilt Jr at the wheel of a Mercedes 90 hp racing car having just set a new land speed record of 92.3 mph in Florida at the 1904 Ormond-Daytona race, January 27, 1904, as illustrated in Sports Car Illustrated. Later that year, in October 1904, he would establish the Vanderbilt Cup.

I would say this is Willie K. Being recognized for the same event that is depicted on the Vanderbilt Cup itself.

I haven’t been on here in a couple of days,my daughter and grandson are visiting this week,so that’s keeping me busy and I don’t have the time. Sunday’s hill climb most have been exciting,it looked like you had no problem with it,you were going at a pretty good clip from what I see in the video, having a blast, all smiles, can’t wait to see the rest of it

My first time at this event and it was lots of fun. I had total confidence that the Black Beast would make the top of the hill. It was interesting to see the nervous faces on some of the drivers as they started up the hill. Everyone attending had a great time. Nice to see you again Howard and congratulations on getting to the top!

Howard, any suggestions on where I may find this photo?

Ted: Soon after the right curve in the mystery photo, is where the new Eisenhower Park bike path begins. Thanks to you, your updates and photos of the path have been very informative. That pilot path will be the one where future paths will connect to and follow the LIMP right of way throughout. I’m looking forward for that day….....

On the photo we’re looking east and we can see the Meadowbrook bridge in the foreground, followed by the Stewart Avenue bridge in the background on the right. On the left in the background the Ladenburg windmill can be seen. Also on the left in the foreground some kind of house or shed is visible, possibly belonging to the Ladenburg property.
The photo must have been taken in the fall of 1908 during the construction of the Motor Parkway, because no fencing is present yet along the sides of the bridge.

Peter, also stay tuned on this week’s mystery conclusion for more info on Ladenberg

Identify this section of the Motor Parkway and its orientation: Meadowbrook/Newbridge Motor Parkway Bridge in East Meadow/Westbury area. View is looking southeast towards the Ladenberg property aptly named the “Oasis”.
Identify the structures in the photo:
Motor Parkway bridge and Ladenberg property mentioned above. Also the Stewart Avenue Bridge. The tall structure on the left is the Ladenberg windmill.
What was the approximate date of the photo? circa 1908, but prior to the Motor Parkway having been opened.
Provide a rationale:
I don’t see posts along the bridge’s roadway as other pictures show.

Peter - I live very close to the area where the Ladenberg estate (“Oasis”) was located and have compiled a good amount of information about the family and the estate but too much to put in this comment. If you can send me your e-mail I’ll gladly send it to you. Art (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address))

I think your looking west towards the Carmen Ave bridge. The windmill in the is on the Boelsen Farm in Westbury .The road looks like its still being constructed so it could be dated 1907 -1908

Instant recognition as Roslyn Lodge looking east from LIRR Oyster Bay line bridge, with Iselin’s mill and farm at left ca. 1911 but, on second look, I’m not so sure now. I won’t cheat and look at Al’s book (not yet). Sam, III

There is NO WAY that 1938 Jaguar Graber Coupe is an SS 100! From what little I can see it’s a 2½ or 3½ litre SS One Jaguar. SS 100s have a low/squat radiator/bonnet, almost square in front view, and this car has the tall front of a standard-height SS One or Two Jaguar. I found ¾ and side views of the Graber to confirm this; it’s almost certainly built-up from a stock 3½-litre SS One Drophead Coupé, with a saloon or Mk V windscreen. Regardless, it’s no SS 100!
