The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

This post-dates my being on LI but I’ll hazard a wild guess - the SW end of the Picnic Ground parking lot at Bethpage State Park, just N f the LIMP RoW, looking N, placed there by NYS Parks, goaded into action and supplied with data and pix by that omni-present and irresistible LIMP Panelist-cum-Society-founder Kroplick guy. :·) Sam, III

Ar risk of being tedious, I am still trying to find my old pix showing a tree-lined “apron” running westerly along the south verge of HHB from the entry to 193rd St. (http://sbiii.com/limp-qns.html#193rdstr)! Sam, III

That interior is high Victorian; exceedingly unlikely to be Pope’s 1910-11 work. Just compare the pix to those on your own blogs on the Petit Trianon - vastly different style. Pope’s was Deco-cum-Moderne. Sam III

I don’t recall any interior doors with frosted glass or the exposed stud like trim on the walls.

why was / is there a poll about who thinks there should be a marker placed at the site of Curtiss FIeld? (And why can’t I find the tally and the percentage of yes and no votes? You see, thee already is a marker at the site of Curtiss Field. It’s in front of the Home Depot in Green Acres Shopping Center in Valley Stream. It’s been there for a few years, thanx to the application to the Town of Hempstead by a former Pres. of the Valley STream Historical Society.

Mystery Foto #21… Since my research came up empty I will go back to guessing. The Kiosk in the photo is at Bethpage State Park near where the LIMP once carried traffic way back when. Signage placed there by Sam Russo, perhaps. The primary source of info in these signs could have been Howard K and Sam Russo.
Is it possible that the wooden stakes at the base of the sign are old LIMP fence posts?

Where exactly is the location for this kiosk?
-at the entrance to the Bethpage Bikeway next to the entrance of the parking lot at Bethpage State Park
Who placed the kiosk at this location? Why?
-NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation due to the LIMP running through the park with portions being bike paths.
Who was the primary source for the information on the Long island Motor Parkway and Vanderbilt Cup Races?
-I have no idea who would possibly have THAT much knowledge of The Motor Parkway. This one is a mystery to me!

We’ve been to Simeone; well worth the trip!

My best guess is Bethpage State Park. Near the North Entrance Parking lot after paying toll. Having been in park in a.while
but the park is hosting a large part of the trail and this is definitely a nys park land. Aw

Franny Lew. Nice. Queens lingo.
As a Westbury boy it was interesting to me that Howard tells me he found this picture at the Westbury library. Wonder how it got there. Wonder where this sign is now!

I am going to say Hidden Pond Park. It touches the LIMP ROW, but I do not know why it is here.

Question….The LIMP was 16 ft in width after Bethpage Lodge? Or just at a certain point in the town of Bethpage?

There is an historical marker near there by the pedestrian overpass. St Francis Prep HS is on the southwest corner of Franny Lew and Horace Harding Expressway. I live right on the opposite side, on the westbound HHE. I’ve seen photos from the 1940s before the Clearview Expy and LIE where Horace Harding is actually a boulevard.

From Mystery Foto #20 Solved:A 1905 Meeting at William K. Vanderbilt, Jr.'s Deepdale Estate Updated: 5/23
From Ariejan Bos:
The Friday mystery was a bit of a challenge this time. This is what I could find, so I’m curious how close I am 😊
The cars are parked in front of Deepdale Estate, built in 1902 for William K. Vanderbilt Jr. The moment of the photo must be somewhere early 1905: the second car is William Vanderbilt’s 90 HP Mercedes still in 1905 Ormond-Daytona racing trim. Although it was the same car in which he set several records at the 1904 Ormond-Daytona meet, he was not as successful in 1905 and didn’t win a race. According to The Motor World ‘his star was in descendency’.
The other cars from right to left: possibly a circa 1904 Mercedes coupe (or limousine: in these early years both names were used for this model); next two identical cars which could be 1904 De Dietrich’s; in the distance probably a 1904 Pope-Toledo with its characteristic body shape. Although William Vanderbilt bought a 40 HP De Dietrich during the summer of 1905, it can’t be one of the cars on the photo as this new type had a honeycomb radiator.
I have no idea about the meeting taking place, but it could be related of course to the Vanderbilt Cup races: all makes on the photo participated in the 1904 as well as the 1905 (and 1906) races.
Best wishes,
Ariejan
