The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Sam, educate us all, tell us the differences in the chassis/cowl etc between the 1927 and 1929 Mercedes. Why is it a strictly 1927? What should be be looking for or at to see the differences?
thanks, Walt

Motor Parkway Inn
Poe and it was used as a place for the Triianon workers and later as an Inn and then as an old age home
The steps were the nine “court house” steps from the Trianon to the sea cliff
The Parkway Inn was located on Lake Drive between Washington Ave and Rosevale Ave.
The building was the Trianon in 1958 after the fire
The property was bought for the construction of a race track
The other photos I can’t recall

my 2 cents….LIMP row in Eisenhower Park, specifically what is the golf course today. Facing east near Stewart Ave /Salisbury Park Drive.
I believe both Willie K and George V both used this strip.
Accident? maybe the 1910?

Say what you will, that S-Modell’s no 1929 car! The minimal special bodywork back aft may well be but the cowl, bonnet, grille, and chassis are strictly 1927! The engine and chassis serial numbers should clarify that beyond question. Send them along to the Daimler-Benz Museum Classic Archiv for verification. Sam, III

-Identify this location and the orientation
Looking East in Eisenhower Park towards present Salisbury Park Drive at the location of the Newbridge Ave parkway bridge.
-Which Vanderbilt Cup Races were held in this location?
1908,1909, 1910 races
-Which major race accident occurred in this location?
USA’s Harold Stone, driving the #12 Columbia in the 1910 VCR, ran off the bridge killing his mechanician William Bacon during the first lap.

Golf cart path in Eisenhower Park - looking towards east toward Salisbury Park Drive. Is it confirmed that this is the LIMP ROW? I tend to think this is it, or very close. Wayne’s map doesn’t show it aligning with the cart path but when on site it does seem to correspond with where the LIMP would be based on the toll lodge remnants at nearby NYCB building.
I sent Howard an interesting pic of a “road” that leads into this location, not sure if it’s significant but it’s worth looking at!

Eisenhower Park, looking East. Golf path. The house we see on the left, through the trees and chain link fence is on Salisbury Park Drive, it is the third house north of the corner of Ladenburg Drive. 1908 Race only.

When I was young my father would take us to this museum from Plainview NY.. I loved looking at these great looking cars. My favorite ones were the Squad as & the old fire engine which we use to climb in the back & ride around the museum grounds..

Few auto enthusiasts accomplished more than Austie. The stories of the auto shows he organized in New York City are amazing.

The section of the Motor Parkway which you can observe in the photo is from just west of Claremont Rd (Battle Row campground today- Old Bethpage) to just east of Broad Hollow Rd (NYS RT. 110 - Melville).
There are 3 bridges still standing in the photo, 1). Claremont Rd PW(ST), 2). Old Bethpage PW, 3). Clody Farm bridge.
The Broad Hollow Rd (RT 110) was taken down by this time.
None of the Vanderbilt Cup Races were held on this section of the Parkway. The 1908 race came off of the parkway and went onto Round Swamp Rd and then northwest. Round Swamp Rd is not displayed on the photo This would be just left of the left edge of the photo.

Holy mackerel, Andy! Look at the first car at the far left in the far row. It’s my little 1961 Ford Anglia - my Jag wasn’t running and Austie let me onto the track to do a very-creditable lap with the oversquare engine barely laboring. Somewhere, I have pix buried of the sad demise of that 5th Ave. bus in Farmingdale ca. 1980. Sam, III

Here I go wild-guessing again but the only loopy-loop area like that I can think of is the 110-Maxess-Ruland-Pinelwan locus. I can’t make out enough detail to guess further. If it IS that location, much of the RoW remains hidden away in there and should be explored further. Sam, III
