    Views from the Pits of the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race

    One innovation of the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race was the first use of service racing pits in an American automobile race.The 1908 rules allowed only the driver and mechanician to work on the car. However, the rules were modified in 1910 to allow two of the pit crew to replenish water, oil and fuel and to assist in replacing tires.

    The Connecticut Humanities Council has posted an article on the history of the Corbin Motor Vehicle Corporation which was based in Bristol, Connecticut. The company entered their Corbin Cannonball racer in the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race.

    Joe Dawson- Hero of the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race & Winner of the Second Indy 500

    Born in 1889 in Odon, Indiana, Joe Dawson competed in the the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race and three Indy 500 Races (1911, 1912 and 1914). Joe Dawson finished second in the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race losing by only 25 seconds and won the 1912 Indy 500 Race. He was considered the hero of the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race for stopping to check on the condition of an injured spectator during the race.

    One of the most elusive pieces of Vanderbilia are the special radiator plates to signify entrants practicing for the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race and the associated Sweepstakes races. Although these plates were documented to exist, I believe no one had actually ever seen them...until my favorite co-author Al Velocci examined this photo of three 1910 Abbott Detroits posted on April 12, 2011.
