The “X” Mercedes Racer in the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race
A total of 116 cars participated in the Vanderbilt Cup Races of Long Island from 1904 to 1910. Only one car raced without a number- the "X" Mercedes driven by American Al Campbell during the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race. As seen in this photo, the "X" car is making the "New Hyde Park Turn" at Lakeville Road and Jericho Turnpike.

Guy Frost, chairman of the Vanderbilt Centennial Celebrations, has selected this photo as his favorite Vanderbilt Cup Race image. Taken during the 1908 race, referee William K. Vanderbilt Jr. is seen discussing the action with retired driver Joe Tracy. Joe drove in three Vanderbilt Cup Races (1904, 1905 and 1906) and two American Elimination Races (1905 and 1906).

The most dramatic image of the Vanderbilt Cup Races
One of the stirring moments that built the legend of the Vanderbilt Cup Race occurred at the Hairpin Turn during the1906 race. A spare tire and rim strapped to the back of the #18 Lorraine-Dietrich broke loose and began to thrash the gas tank. Riding mechanician Franville clutched the heavy mounted tire and lost his balance. Just as the car skidded through the turn, the French driver Arthur Duray handled the tight corner with one hand on the wheel while rescuing his assistant with his left arm.…

Joe Tracy Honored By Race Fans
On the 50th anniversary of the death of Joe Tracy, a group of race fans honored the Vanderbilt Cup Race driver with a visit to his gravesite on Long Island. Led by Tony Carroll, Secretary of the Vintage Sports Car Club of America, Joe was honored yesterday with a toast of Old Paddy's Irish Wiskey.

Film “The 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race”
The 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race was one of the most exciting sporting events of its era- drawing over 200,000 spectators to Long Island. This rare film shows the race action among the French, Italian, German and American cars at the grandstand on Jericho Turnpike in Westbury and the Hairpin Turn at Wheatley Road in Old Westbury.
