The Christie Front-Wheel Drive Car in the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race
Among the most unique entries for the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race was the front-wheel drive Christie, named after its owner and creator, J. Walter Christie. One of just two cars to use Goodrich tires it was the first front-wheel drive car. Spur gears on each end of the crankshaft applied the engine’s 60 horsepower directly to the front axle.

The “X” Mercedes Comes to Roslyn for the 1905 Race
Only one of the 116 cars that participated in the six Long Island Vanderbilt Cup Races did not have a number...the "X" Mercedes driven by Al Campbell in the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race. Campbell used the "X" instead of the unlucky 13 which he had drawn as the number and starting position for his car.

Meeting the Granddaughter of a Vanderbilt Cup Race Photographer
Today I had a fascinating meeting with Catherine Pickering, granddaughter of William Pickering. As one of the first Long Island photographers, William Pickering shot scenes of the the Vanderbilt Cup Races from 1905 to 1910. Pickering would then sell these photos as postcards in his East Broadway Roslyn store.

Vanderbilt Cup Race Drivers on the Broadway Stage in 1906
Last week, a photo was posted of Elsie Janis on stage for the 1906 musical The Vanderbilt Cup. The above recently restored photo was taken during the same night as the drivers and mechanicians posed with Elsie Janis after the show.

The Premier Vanderbilt Cup Racer that Never Raced
The Premier Motor Company of Indianapolis, Indiana in 1905 built a special race car to compete in the 1905 American Elimination Trial and Vanderbilt Cup Race. The four-cylinder car had a huge 923.4 cubic inch engine; the largest air-cooled motor in existence and some speculated that it could produce 100 horsepower. As shown in this photo submitted by Mark Dill, this Premier Vanderbilt Cup Racer is currently exhibited at the Hall of Fame Museum at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
