Looking Back at the 2016 Keeneland Concours d’Elegance

A look back at an amazing coincidence from the 2016 Keeneland Concours d"Elegance.

Back in 2016, Chrysler's Chrysler attended the Keeneland Concours d"Elegance in Lexington, Kentucky. While researching past owners of the newly acquired Duesenberg J Murphy Convertible Sedan Berline #2448 J-399, Archivist Gram Spina uncovered an amazing coincidence about the 2016 Keeneland Concours d'Elegance.

2016 Keeneland Concours d"Elegance

On July 17, 2016, Chrysler's Chrysler attended the prestigious Keeneland Concours d"Elegance in Lexington, Kentucky. Competition from other cars within the Class Coach Built Classics class was very strong and every car within the class was worthy of winning.

However, it was Chrysler's Chrysler that took home the top honors and took home the Judge's Choice award.

Prominently featured in the bound program at the top of the class, Chrysler's Chrysler was in top form with its 2014 restoration.

Others in the Coach Built Classics class included a 1927 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A-S, 1931 Chrysler CG Roadster, 1932 Packard Dietrich Stationary Coupe...

...a 1937 Peugeot Darl'mat 402 Coupe, the 'Best in Show' winning 1934 Bugatti Type 57 and lastly, a 1933 Duesenberg Convertible Sedan Berline.

But boy, does that Duesenberg look familiar!

That Duesenberg just happened to be the same Duesenberg J Murphy Convertible Sedan Berline #2448 that was acquired by the Kroplick Collection last year!

Although the Duesy presented very nicely, it did come up short against Chrysler's Chrysler, but what a coincidence that eventually, 8 years and another owner later, the Duesy would end up in the same stable as the Chrysler!

The Duesy at Keeneland looking sharp! At the time, the Duesy was owned by collector Charles L. Mong III. Mong had purchased the car from previous owner Gene Perkins. Perkins was the longest owner of Duesy #2448 and was responsible for its top notch restoration in the 70's.

But the coincidence doesn't end there! Also, within the Coach Built Class was the other former owner of Duesy #2448, Gene Perkins with another car from his collection, the 1932 Packard Dietrich Stationary Coupe. So, in other words, 2 former owners, and one future owner of Duesenberg #2448 were all competing against each other! But in the end, it was the Chrysler taking home the honors.

Gene Perkins also won "Best In Show" with his 1932 Auburn at the 2024 Keeneland Concours d'Elegance .

Looking forward to 2025!

After an 8 year absence from the Keeneland Concours, another car from the Kroplick Collection has been invited to the Lexington, Kentucky event.

The July, 2025 Concours will see the 1963 Mustang III Concept Show Car attending the prestigious event.

Let's hope the mighty Mustang III will show as well as Chrysler's Chrysler did in 2016!

Howard as a board member and former chair of the Carriage Association of America showcase committee I have judged the carriage portion of the Keenland concours. I wasn’t there in 2016 but each year it draws some top class cars and carriages. Congratulations on your well deserved award and good luck in 25! JeRita

Nice - you never know what cars will end up in the Kroplick collection.  I might just put my 2012 Toyota Camry up for auction one of these days.
