Kleiner’s Korner Part I: Illustrating the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race and the Motor Parkway
In addition to magazines using photographs to graphically enhance a story, illustrations were also often times used. One illustrator employed by "The Motor Way" magazine was Henry Thiede whose drawings in 1906 portrayed anecdotes of the Vanderbilt Cup Race and the building of the Motor Parkway.

Kleiner’s Korner: Part 3 (updated) - More States Vying for the 1907 Vanderbilt Cup Race
As it became evident that Long Island might not host the 1907 Vanderbilt Cup Race several states tried to convince race officials of having it in their states. Colorado, Nevada and Missouri were three that made overtures besides New Jersey and California that were discussed in Parts 1 and 2.

Kleiner’s Korner: Part 2 - California Wants the 1907 Vanderbilt Cup Race
While New Jersey made its case to host the 1907 Vanderbilt Cup Race automobile enthusiasts on the west coast also let race officials know of their interest. Los Angeles and San Francisco proposed holding the race in their cities and began the process of gaining government approval and deciding on a course.

Kleiner’s Korner: From the Helck Family Collection- In Search of the 1905 Locomobile Racer
Prior to "Old 16" gaining fame and fortune, the Locomobile Company built a "monster" racer that participated in the 1905 Gordon Bennett and Vanderbilt Cup Races. While much is known about "Old 16", very little attention is given to why the 1905 racer was built and what became of it. An unpublished article found in the Peter Helck Family Collection and additional research and information provided by blog reader Allen Haywood provides further detail.

Kleiner’s Korner: Part 1 - Where Will the 1907 Vanderbilt Cup Race be Held?
During the summer of 1907, Willie K. and the Vanderbilt Cup Commission had to decide if Long Island would once again be the venue for the Vanderbilt Cup Race. Several states made it be known that if not on Long Island, they would host the race. New Jersey was one such state.

Kleiner’s Korner: Part 5 - Motorcycling on Long Island Roads
Numerous motorcycle races and "economy" tests were held on Long Island in the early 1900s many of which were on other roads besides the Motor Parkway (some however, were influenced by the Vanderbilt Cup Races). These photos are from one such event held on July 3, 1908.

Kleiner’s Korner: Part 4 - Motorcycling on the Motor Parkway
In the final edition of this series, part 4 provides information on the use of the Motor Parkway by motorcyclists, as either a race venue or a means of transportation. As indicated in prior blogs, motorcyclists were eventually banned from the parkway due to excessive accidents. Documentation is from "Motorcycle Illustrated" and "Bicycle World and Motorcycle Review" except where noted.

Kleiner’s Korner: Part 3 - Motorcycle Races on the Motor Parkway
In addition to the Vanderbilt Cup Races, the Motor Parkway was used as a race venue by local motorcycling enthusiasts. Various clubs found the roadway to be an excellent choice as its length and not having grade crossings made it a suitable route. Documentation is from various issues of "Bicycle World and Motorcycle Review" between 1909 and 1911.
