The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Great stuff. My memories started 60 years ago when my aunt and uncle lived on Foxcroft Rd, which parallels LIMP, and I would visit them. I then moved to Evans Ave and Chaffee St and behind my house was a sump or dump that later in my residence there would realize it was the ROW to the LIMP. This road has been in my life forever. Great to know a younger person gets it with history!!!! Bob

“PHONE GREAT NECK 243w”? I lived on LI almost all my life and my first phone number was CEDARHURST 8307 but I don’t remember EVER seeing a letter after the number. Some sort of Party Line or extension? Anyone? Sam, III

Thanks for sharing a wonderful moment, Joe! All of Ron’s 1983 pix are at <http://sbiii.com/limpbrdg.html#rrbridgs>. I also beg your indulgence. Dave, those posts alongside Vanderbilt Drive North re right on the RoW. The alignment of the LIMP here never made any sense to me. The bridge points ever so slightly to the right (west) of the apartment roof centerline, and the RoW swings to the west just before OCR, yet the RoW berween Pell Terrace and Russell Road is EAST of all this! Doctored aerial sent to HK. The N-S boundary between Mineola and Carle Place at this spot shifted after the LIMP was built but that has nothing to do with this alignment question. HELP! Sam, III

Adding some more (all predicated if my original answers are somewhat correct).
Model: Too confusing, but here’s another possibility
1939 Mack Model CW3G (ser# 1122)
Original purpose of Mack were trolley cars.
Late 30s, early 40s.

Tremendous memories , thank you for sharing with all of us. I have had similar “I was there” memories at other auto related locations , and those locations as well are now no longer there. ( I walked around the abandoned factory in Syracuse , NY where the Franklin car was built , and was there to see it demolished with explosives and caught it on movie film in the 1970s) . Moments in time captured forever in memories that are most important to share.

Great story, Joe! It reminds me of the day in 1971 when the kids on my block at Mitchel Field located the remnants of the Central RR Bridge that still stands today in the woods inside the transition loop from Eastbound Stewart Ave. to Northbound Meadowbrook Parkway.
We thought we had stumbled on some great archaeological find that was sure to make the newspapers! I rode my bike home hurriedly to get my Dad and show him what we’d found.

The Simeone Foundation Museum is an amazing place, as is the attitude behind it. Having a collection like that, and helping people both enjoy and learn from it, is special.

Back around 1947, we would go down on the rail road tracks in East Williston and put a few pennies on the tracks under I U Willets Road bridge and wait for the next train to come along and flatten my pennies—- what are they worth today besides a few memories?? TT

Analysis- There’s 3 bikes, and the boy is swiftly following the other 2. No harm in saying your 1 of the 2 that’s ahead, Fred. Anyone notice the man & woman on the left above on Jericho Tpke, next to the railing? Possibly their parents letting them play down there, but NO tunnel travels what so ever.

I don’t recognize the boy in the photo, but it is after all 59 years ago. Wow! The bicycle with the mudflaps could very well be mine. I almost always had them on my bikes. Although there is no way to prove it, can’t we just say that it’s mine? Well, I’m going to anyway.

After a bit of reference work, I am going to settle for MACK as they start out in 1903 and with the merger Sauer Motor and Hewitt Motor and in 1913 started to
make other products such as buses, fire trucks and specialized equipment. The first location was in Brooklyn then to Long island City. As a side note: Artist Peter Helck was a commissioned painter in the 1940’s.

Part 11: I have started with the MACK Bus and will work on this and more
today…......

This week’s subject is a bit complicated due to mergers and take overs and starts
out with Island Traction in 1926 becoming Schenck Bus Company and they purchase
Universal Auto Bus Service in 1960. They started in Great Neck, NY and moved to
Jericho Turnpike in Floral Park, NY. In 1973 MSBA came into the picture as king of public transportation. This is a chicken and egg story and is part 1 of this project.

Also amazing Joe, is how you just missed Mr. Ridolph snapping away on top of the bridge, while you’re in the car with your dad, waiting for Mom. He was up there! I love this stuff. Thank you guys for recording this historic event of the bridge!

A wonderful childhood experience. Thanks Joe for sharing! As I read on I can visualize myself on that bridge. Yes that woozy feeling. What strikes me most about this bridge is that same low railing protection for autos, also found in Central Ave and Westbury Ave bridge in Levittown. Thankfully no incidents ever occured with those larger sized wheels of the day. I believe the low volume’d traffic of Motor Parkway helped prevent such mishaps. But considering the overall design of the parkway, which included banked curves, guardrails, over and under bypasses, exit and entrance ramps, paved roadways (rare for the times), I believe they did pretty good for a first time attempt.

Somehow I inadvertently indicated that I was not interested in receiving comments regarding this subject. It was a mistake as that was not my intention. I surely would like to receive any follow up comments. Thank you, Fred.
