Vanderbilt Cup Races

I think we’re looking at the first section of the Northern State Parkway under construction in North Hills / North New Hyde Park. Main Roads in the area include New Hyde Park Road, I. U. Willets Road and possibly Marcus Avenue. The photo is looking approximately northeast with the LIMP starting at the bridge in the lower left and heading east through the trees. Besides that bridge, the other two bridges hidden by trees go over New Hyde Park Road and under Old Court House Road. Since the two NSP bridges are complete but not the roadway, I’ll date the photo around 1931-1932. The golf course is The Links Golf Club, which had its own special access to the LIMP and might be visible if you look real close.

The Hertel is on display at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum in Fairbanks, Alaska.  I highly recommend this place as one of the top U.S. auto museums.  It owns a number of Clark’s cars, along with some other ones from fellow Long Island collectors.

Such shockingly low sell prices even considering the times. One can only wonder in awe at the total value these historic cars would bring in today compared to less than $100,000 back then. My Mom and Dad bought me a few of those postcards when we visited the museum in the early 60s. My Brother Dennis and I also got two plastic models of Indy 500 winners. Gram still has mine, a Maserati, on display in his room. I’d love to know what else was available in that wonderful museum gift shop.

I see the LIMP bridge being built over the new Northern Parkway in the bottom left.  A little east the new bridge takes New Hyde Park Road over the new parkway.  Hidden in the trees is the LIMP bridge over NHP Road, and further along, another bridge goes under Old Courthouse Road.  The Linx Golf Club is your golf course prominently seen.  IU Willets Road is being dissected by our new highway.  In the upper left I see the bridge for Shelter Rock Road cross over the Northern State Parkway.  A beautiful picture of old Long Island.

This is the Northern State Parkway under construction facing east.  The overpasses for New Hyde Park rd and Motor Parkway are clearly visible on the lower left of the picture.  The overpass that carried the Motor Parkway over the Northern State is below the New Hyde Park rd overpass.  The date of the photo would be between 1931 to 1933.  The rationale for this date is that construction of the Northern State at the Queens border started in 1931 and it reached Willis ave further east in 1933.  The Motor Parkway starts at the bottom left of the photo and goes to the right, up to about the middle of the picture on the right side.  The Motor Parkway bridge for New Hyde Park rd is to the right of the new Northern State overpass but is obscured by trees.  Further east is the Motor Parkway bridge for Old Courthouse rd but that seems to be obscured as well.  The golf course is the Links course and is now occupied by a residential community.

It’s truly exciting to see the Tucker Dream Team coming together to join Tucker 1044 at the upcoming Westhampton Beach Concours! This event promises to be a remarkable gathering for car enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The legacy of the Tucker automobile is one that continues to captivate hearts, and having the opportunity to witness such a significant piece of automotive history is a privilege.

Amazingly sleek.  I can see some Hollywood star of the time arriving somewhere in it.  I wonder how it was allowed years ago to turn into a wreck; fortunately well restored.  My dad loved Pierce Arrows (along with Packards and RR SP P1’s) and would loved to have seen this.

The photo shows a Sadi Spéciale with a Hispano-Suiza Type 8-engine. The car was built for French aviator Joseph Sadi-Lecointe (1891-1944). The same engine had helped his Nieuport-Delage plane set the world altitude record in 1924. The race at Gometz-Le-Châtel took place in November 1926, and the Sadi Speciale’s driver, Paul Guérin, did the fastest time of the day.

You can see some similarities between a Nieuport Delage racing airplane flown by Sadi-LeCointe and the automobile, both using Hispano motors.

I’m not a gear head but totally appreciate your collection Howard.  My ride in the “Black Beast” was very special to me.  I think touchtones to the past are important.  So to associate myself to a vehicle so important to the 1909 racing world as well as an important part of the history of central Long island I say thank you.

The cemetery at 5 Towns College is called Nostrand Cemetery. The parkway actually clipped the south-east corner of the property.

AQ as it was known by most of us was an interesting publication. I knew L.Scott Bailey who owned it and was friends with many of the staff members over the decades - especially Beverly Rae Kimes. I met her via Austin Clark as she would take the train out to Glen Cove to Austin’s home to do research in his library.
She encouraged me to write stories and one I did in 1981 for AQ when she was editor won an award from the Society of Automotive Historians . Bev and her husband Jim Cox and I would go to antique toy shows together in the tri state area. They weren’t interested in them at first but upon seeing my collection decided that they were fun and started to collect with a great passion. Great friends, we would also go on old car tours together - they would take their 1930 Auburn sedan and I would drive my 1931 Franklin or 1941 Packard.

There is also a small cemetery on the east side of Harned Rd. in Commack, close to the Harned Rd. exit from the north bound Sunken Meadow Parkway.

Additional information from Sylvain Dumora; this was a Hispano-engined special constructed for the aviator Joseph Sadi-Lecointe.  It also appeared at Montlhery.
The hillclimb was Nov. 21, 1926.
