The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

TA, RA! My page 8 is now restored, covering the Mineola-Carle Place segment; including 284 Rudolph Road, the MIneola Lodge, in 2000, as is my Central Nassau continuation Page 1, covering Russell and Old Country Roads in 2004. WHEW! (Some of the thumbnails are still awful but the pix behind them are good and I’m not up to redoing the t/ns yet). On to Hike VII!

My partners & I have a bar in San Francisco that is Named ‘Capt. EDDIE RICKENBACKERS A.E.F.’
We have been collecting his memorabilia over the years & are looking for any prints or footage that may be put on display.
I thoroughly enjoyed scrolling through the 1915 exposition footage.
We also have a restaurant named Chief Sullivan’s after the Fire Chief Dennis Sullivan who perished in the great disaster of 1906.
I’m proud to honor the memories of heroes from our past & will do all I can to preserve & protect their legacy.

Dan- I have the top of the Searingtown arch (bridge) at 60’ away from IU Willets center to center. A closer look here of the bridge.

Haven’t yet explored the RoW dirt path section but it looks promising. I believe the parkway on the Sugar Maple side rests on the house’s foundations and not in their backyards. Definitely worth a closer look there as well.

Adding to the mystery, the photo was taken in July with dense foliage, where one can’t see the Motor Pkwy east (or west) of New Hyde Park Rd heading towards the Old Courthouse Rd bridge, except the area that was cleared for 3003 NHP Rd construction.

Tricky mystery. Attached is my two cents. Awesome photo Art, keep ‘em coming

Edith- a few interesting facts;
Old Broad Hollow Rd would eventually be expanded eastward by the Motor Pkwy toll house, but expanded westward by your home just to the south. The likely reason for this was to soften Old Broad Hollow road’s sharp curve allowing the roadway today to be more streamlined.
LILCO pole #50 or 51 still exists directly in front of your home today. It was untouched with the roadway expansion to the west. As of Aug 2017, there is a double pole at the location (a newer to replace the older). I’m planning to take a closer look soon before the older is removed.
The Nohile house/barn did have an irregular shape from overhead (not rectangular or square) as seen here. It’s former location remains a vacant lot on the SE corner of Ruland and Republic. Another site to investigate. Brian, are you in?

Thanks again Frank,
As to the Farmhouse and property… per last foto the property (Edith’s) extends down along Broad Hollow Rad to the Town Line so that if you drew a line along the Southern edge of St Rose property (the Woods) to Broad Hollow Rd you would have the Southern edge of our property.
As to the Nohile property… as I recall, their farmhouse was a combination farmhouse barn, all as one piece, sometimes seen from the olde days.

Ouch! My page 8 is unrestored and covers the Mineola-Carle Place segment; including 284 Rudolph Road, the MIneola Lodge, in 2000; the page is in very bad shape and requires a lot of work, Ditto my Central Nassau continuation Page 1, covering Russell and Old Country Roads in 2004 - I’d better get busy! Hi Howard, the Bethpage library has the program on 4/12 starting at 6 PM, here it says 7PM, which is it? We’re planning to go and need the correct time. Sounds like a really interesting evening. Thanks, George

My family has a big silver cup from one of the Glidden tours. We also have many original pictures of her and her cars. She was my father’s grandma.I actually sold a letter written to her by a opera singer named Enrico Caruso I believe? Sounded like they had something going on the side?
From The continuing story of Joan Newton Cuneo: "Those daring young (wo)men in their racing machines"
I would say the 2nd close up picture is misleading. That is not, and cannot be the Buckley School. The Buckley school is on the northern side of IU Willets Road. And in the picture, IU Willets Road is up at the top left hand corner of the picture, not even showing where the new NSP dissected it. Please take a look and let me know what you think???

Thank YOU Edith for locating your home! After sketching an overlay, I was hoping for any remnants still existing of your farm. Only the cultivated field survived (please see attachments). It seems to now be used for storing heavy equipment of some sort. Everything else has been covered with pavement. Your home now sits by the southern entrance to the Costco parking lot. As you said, there’s nothing left to see. But the Nohiles farmhouse location, once at the southeast corner of Ruland and Republic remains a vacant lot. There may be undisturbed remnants still there. Something to look for next time I’m in the area. Thanks again Edith.

Happy to see a Mystery Foto view of my neighborhood as it appeared in 1932… but I disagree that the road on the right was either Marcus Avenue (which is located almost a 1/2 mile south of this point) or a section of I.U. Willets Road.
Though not distinct in the photo, and despite being obliterated by the new Parkway, the course of I.U.W. Road runs from the west (a.k.a. Hollow Lane) to the east directly between the Shearman mansion (now the Buckley School) and the golf course (now The Links condos). This can be seen on the maps ‘01’ and ‘02’ at http://sbiii.com/limpmap1.html as well as contemporary maps.
I was unable to track down any citation that the “road on the right” was a mapped, named street, and so would venture a guess that it was a trail used by construction vehicles to access the Parkway from near what is now the site of 3003 New Hyde Park Road.
Thanks, Jim
From Updated: Mystery Foto #14 Solved: The Northern State Parkway Under Construction in 1932
The location of the photo is the Northern State Parkway being constructed in New Hyde Park, Manhasset Hills, and North Hills. The photo is facing towards the northeast.
The Northern State Parkway(under construction), New Hyde Park Rd, I.U. Willets Rd and the LIMP. The 2 bridges are for New Hyde Park Rd and the LIMP.
The date of the photo I would say is in the early to mid part of 1932. The parkway ground breaking was in March of 1931 and it opened to traffic on 6/15/33.
The estate property mentioned was originally that of Isaac Underhill Willets(I.U. Willets. The estate building and property at the time of the photo was owned by L.H. Sherman. He was a prominent lawyer and the first mayor of the Village of North hills when it was incorporated in September of 1929.
The buildings and surrounding property is now the Buckley Country Day School.
In 2003 the movie “School of Rock” was filmed in the building.

Saying this track is on the “Central Line” (as above) is misleading and technically incorrect. The Central line ran about 3/4 mile south of these tracks—VERY close to the LIMP. These tracks are correctly identified as being on the MAIN line. There was an intersection of of the Main Line and Center Line very near the LIMP overpass.

Most likely incorrect but here goes. Lake Success with Deepdale on top right, looking SW over the NSP with Lakeville Rd bridge and Moses’ 2nd Motor Parkway bridge over New Hyde Park Rd. Moses’ 1st bridge over NSP still to be built.
